Displacement booths to be used by UMMU's for instant teleportation.

Basically, you put the booths whereever you want, and can teleport UmmUs between them.

Being another random idea i picked up on Orbiter IRC, the question is - is anyone wants one, and what can be done out of it?
Ideas are welcome.
 
Replace the bloody mesh. This is ugly and completely unrealistic.

A real booth has to look like this:

The original idea (and I think I'm partly to blame for this) would be to have such a booth as a UCGO cargo. The ship goes to the world, moon, whatever, drops off the cargo, unpacks it and boom, transporter available for shifting UMMU's between worlds.
 
I was trying to base it off the TARDIS :( but I also needed to keep it low poly

Given that i don't have any 3D modelling programs around for the moment, it was either a simple romboid, a procedural mesh worth a sleep-less night, or a volunteer. I choose the latter.

Sounds even more interesting, but so far i have no idea what UCGO cargo is. Could wait till it's out, could make it fit into XR2 bay.

It should (I think) just be a config file, i.e. This box which changes to THAT mesh when the ummu activates it. I've not played with this part of the UCGO BETA yet but I'll give it a go.

Perhaps this could be extended for any vessel?

A sort of "as long as it fits, we can teleport it" sort of thing. :P

just tried it and it all works, UMMU's can transport themselves and anything they are carrying. :lol:
 
Sounds good like a transporter from Star Trek. Could it be used to transfer between vessel no mesh seen. Like transfer between 2 attached vessels on the ground. Or maybe 2 vessels not docked.

Yoohooo teleportation!!!

Now I will be able to set up alien invasion mission. Aliens from distant planet will send a small fast probe carrying teleportation booth with objective to secretly deploy the booth in some remote location on Earth. Then the aliens disguised as humans will teleport in with objective to TAKE OVER THE WORLD.

That sounds like a distinctly different add-on. A wireless UMMU vessel-vessel transfer?
Hm. A beam-a-passenger-down-to-a-planet kind of thing? The booths system is a module, so it could target any vessel and any point.

What kind of aliens will want a planet like that? Those pesky humans always ruining every plan, however much you exterminate them.

With all of this talk of displacement booths, how did Niven get missed?
He never did. His stories given the name, dialing, and booth-shape.
 
Or maybe not- if it were then the StarGate television series wouldn't have been so successful. ;)

The problem with that idea, that I see, is that it's in essence removing the "flight" from "Space Flight Simulator". Which is not to my liking, personally. I like this mod as it currently is, for simple UMMU transporting, though.
