Installation can' t seem to install any thing?

What operating system do you have?

WinXP?
Win...cough...Vista?
Win7?

You said your pc is "brand new", so I guess you have Win7.

Does Orbiter run after being installed for the very first time, without any add-on?
It should perform a quick system check, and then run.

You said you downloaded it again. Good.
What format did you download? Was it the zip or the msi install file?

This is the page with install instructions, very easy...
http://www.orbiter-forum.com/download.php

If it was the zip file, you have to ceate a new folder for it (say, C:\Orbiter), and unzip it there.

Thank you Riply. I get ORBITER and it runs fine .I just can;t down load any thing .Except things that have ther own download installer. Like DG4. UMmu. and cars and cargo. But thoughs are all i can get . In over a mounth.?

---------- Post added at 01:43 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:35 AM ----------

I watched the install tutoural .I do every thing it says . to the letter. over and over. Some things go to the senerios file but when they start to load I get a critical error message. It says see orbiter log.

Awesome! Now you have a baseline Orbiter installation that's (more-or-less) "clean" and working. You may want to consider taking what you have right now and saving it in .zip format as a known good backup.

Now to figure out what's going on with your non-working add-ons. Do you use winzip, 7zip or the default windows unzip program? Whichever you use, you'll want to extract the add on that you've downloaded into your Orbiter folder. Mine is plain and simple on the C: drive. In any case, you'll want to maintain directory structure, which basically means the download will be unpacked into the proper folders.

You may have a whole mess of downloads unpacked in your "My Documents" folder that are not doing anything but taking up space. So long as they are in their proper place, you should be good-to-go.

Iam using the default windows unzip program.

---------- Post added at 03:01 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:40 AM ----------

I downloaded baseSyn MFD. and Aero brake.0.96.2. and there was nothing in my scenarios file . (modules).?

I'm at work right now, but I don't remember either of them adding any scenarios.

When the Orbiter load screen comes up, there should be a MODULES tab that you can select. Once that opens, you should see a group of check boxes that you can select to activate that particular module (in this case it'd be Basesync and Aerobrake).

I use the default unzip about 90% of the time myself. Simple right click on the zipped file, extract all to my Orbiter folder and it's 99.9% good. That other 0.1% are things that were not packaged properly or need some modification.

Something to consider now is the Jonessoft Mod Tool. It is a small program that will sit inside your Orbiter folder. Upon running it, it will create a folder called "MODS" (unpack all your downloads into the MODS folder). Run the Mod Tool and a dialog box pops up that allows you to add or subtract add-ons from your Orbiter installation. It's really good for troublshooting as well.

For example if Orbiter runs great, but you see an add-on that you want to try out, you use the mod tool to add it. If it doesn't work or causes a crash to desktop, you can get rid of it with a simple mouse click, rather than dig through Orbiter to remove all the files manually.

If you want to give it a shot, we'd be ready to help.

I did say scenarios Sorry I ment to say i opened orbiter. went to moduals . but there is never any box or any thing else to click..This has been my whole problem the whole time.I will try to get the Jonessoft Mod Tool.and try it . THANK YOU ROBERT.

No problem!

Just make sure that you are unpacking (unzipping, whatev) to your Orbiter directory.

You said you've gotten the DGIV to work. Have you tried the XR-2 or XR-5? They are both pretty big downloads, but worth it. And, neither have any other dependencies (like spacecraft3, etc).

There are a whole slew of add-ons that need additional add-ons (dependencies). Some are even outdated and now not quite compatable without serious tinkering. Take it easy, take it slow. And we'll get this sorted out.

Robert, before going into JoneSoft mod tool (sorry PhantomCruiser), which could add confusion, you need to understand how add-ons are installed.

So, you have extracted Orbiter2010-P1 in a folder on your HD. It should look something like this:

MGalleryItem.php

Now you download, say, "BaseSync MFD 2.3", at the bottom of this page.

You unzip it (extract it) in a temporary folder, just to see what it contains. It should look something like this:

MGalleryItem.php

See the similar folders (Config, Doc, Modules) between the two screenshots?

Now all you have to do is to select those three (all) folders from the add-on temporary folder, and CTRL-X CTRL-V them into your Orbiter folder, letting Windows overwrite what it will warn you about. Just go ahead.

In the end you'll have the (now empty) temporary folder to delete.
You still have the original downloaded BaseSync MFD zip file somewhere, should you need it again.

Now go to Orbiter Launchpad -> Modules tab and activate BASESYNC module.

When you get the hang of it, you can unzip add-ons directly into your Orbiter folder, without the need of a temp folder.

Some (very few) add-ons don't follow this default folder structure, so they won't work if you don't fix them before moving/copying them to Orbiter folder.
In those cases you'll need the temp folder approach.

I agree with you Ripley (to a point). And unrelated, is that Capt Wild Bill Kelso of the United States Army Air Corp?

Having all the add-ons installed like that does work. But in the event of a conflict, it can make it difficult to uninstall the add-on creating the problem (it becomes a seek-and-destroy mission).

It was the way I had my first ever Orbiter installation. It eventually became so big it took up almost as much space as windows. Eventually things started to conflict and step on one another and I was directed to the Mod Tool. Either way, if we can get our new Orbinaut going here, it's all good.

You are right about JSGME, but first things first.
The user seems to have "basic" problems...let's solve them first.

And yep, that's John Belushi!

OK, I did every thing you nice people , have told me to do. I get the same results I got last week , last mounth .. All the files are where they should be. I have the scenario screen open. there is no XR2 listed. But there is a scenarios folder for XR2 on the main orbiter launch pad screen . But when I click on it it starts to load and then I get a critical error message that says see orbiter log. I saw orbiter log it dosn't say any thing about XR2.? orbinaut Robert.

I got the MFD'S. After hour's of clicking the files .I am just sure there is somthing I am not doing. A button ? A click ? some where ? I have no Idea (what could it be)? Obinaut Robert.

---------- Post added at 08:33 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:54 AM ----------

I now have the XR2 and the XR5 in launch pad . I have a module for the XR2 but no module for XR6. And both of them .Start to load . And then the critical erroer message pops up. But every thing else in launch pad works just fine. Help please. Robert !

Which critical error message? Can you provide a screenshot of the message box?

Dont know how to provide a screen shot yet . But it says critical error see log file.It comes on when I try to load any new addons. The addon will start to load and then the message will appear. Thanks for your interest Robert .

Depends on your operating system, windows 7 has a special tool for taking screen captures, for earlier versions, you use the Print - key on your keyboard:

  1. Press ALT+print to copy a screenshot of the currently active window into the clipboard.
  2. Start Paint
  3. Paste the contents of the clipboard into the empty image in Paint.
  4. Save the file
  5. Attach the file to your post here.
All pretty easy, after you have done it the first time. You can identify the keyboard of an Orbiteer easily: The Print-key is hardly readable.

I know how to copy and past . It wont let me copy it. I hit ALT nothing happend. I right clicked nothing happend . Itried to get a bit map image. It said it was not a file. I went to paint but I had nothing to put in It. Thanks Robert.

(ALT isn't necessary)

Yes, but I am not interested in his IM friendlist or the collection of provoking animations.

And yes, you can press two keys at once. Should be basic knowledge already.

Igo to launch pad. I click on the ship I want XR2 . I think orbiter crashes to the desktop and then a small white box comes up saying (terminating after critical error. see orbiter.log for details.. I have seen orbiter log file it says nothing about this. thanks Robert.

Do the default scenarios work? No point in trying to fix something if the install is broken.
