News Is James Cameron launching an asteroid mining company? (Planetary Resources thread)

Oh man, I wish I'd known about this--I totally would've gone, since it's right here in Seattle.

James Cameron gets bored easily- apparently, diving down to the deepest point on the planet and revolutionizing filmmaking isn't nearly enough for him.

Well what would you be doing if you were a billionaire with money to blow?

Well, it's next Tuesday, so there is still time. I think you should go, and tell us what they say! :salute:

Well, good luck with that. Unless you're selling to off-world customers, it'll never be cost effective. Even if you just skim gold, silver and platinum from a metallic asteroid, the world's governments will never let you land it all and crash the world precious metals market.

It'll look amazing in 3D with a Celine Dion song playing quietly :P

D'oh, I fail at dates. Unfortunately I won't be able to go next Tuesday, I need to take my girlfriend to a doctor thing...

Looking at the names, they certainly have the money to get a mission going, and probably to see its success. The other question is wheather they can make it turn a profit, which is the really tricky part in such a venture.

O-o-okay, he is now off my personal "Eat the Rich" list.

I wouldn't even have considered him... far too skinny, a walking Meal Rejected by Ethiopians.

I prefer John Paulson.

I don't even have to think about for one second: build a company like SpaceX and offer manned as well as cargo transportation into space for ESA, NASA etc. and commercial companies to finally get things going for future space colonialization.

We urgently need more people like Elon Musk and James Cameron in the economy and politics. People who don't waste their money on decadency but spend it on engineering and progress.

I'm somewhat surprised; I just skimmed the index of Peter Diamandis' recent book Abundance and didn't find any reference of mining.

I'd be inclined to bet that the first resources they go after are relevant to the venture of space exploration itself, for example making fuel on the surface of the moon or mars. Consider that the name of the venture is Planetary Resources. Setting up an infrastructure for fuel would drastically reduce the cost of all later operations. It would also mean companies like SpaceX could be both service providers and customers. Elon Musk recently said that his plan for commercial trips to Mars relied on making the return fuel on the surface.

Makes me wonder how he's planing to get it off the surface... It's not like he can just crunch out a few LVs on Mars.

Okay, seriously, what do you think their business idea is?

Mining the Moon, mining asteroids, using solar energy and vacuum in open space for making HiFi alloys, what?

If they all are business people, they should think about reaching a sort of break-even and investment returns.
