Universal Remote Manipulator System is a special ship representing the space manipulator (like Space Shuttle RMS). You can attach the manipulator to any other vessel in Orbiter.Designed for Orbiter 2006 Edition, patch 1 (build 060929)

You Sir are the man !
That's EXACTLY what I've been waiting for !
Great job

I've been secretly hoping for this one.

Now I'm going to have to follow through and go back to my space station and rebuild the thing in its original incarnation. As it was built to support the building of the first L5 torus, it's needed Universal Remote Manipulator System since the beginning.

Now I've got the excuse to do it. Any one have any designs floating around for orbital solar furnaces and industrial metal mills?

Fabulous work, Yuri!

I'm having a blast with this thing. I should check orbit hangar and here more often; you guys keep coming up with cool stuff. :speakcool:

Now, for some space-era art (the red tag says "person"):

New version released.

New control mode added. "Target point mode" - based on inverse kinematics.
New option - "Grapple closest object".

Thank you much Kulch !!!

On a side note ... I keep reading that this thing has issues when attached to the XR5 because of the shifting center of gravity ... I haven't had a problem with it at all so far ... but then, I am attaching it to the XR5's standard payload bay (no need to have to use a Universal Cargo Deck ... which is a great addon in it's own right) ... which doesn't do any shifting that I can tell ...

If you are talking about the XR5's center-of-gravity shifting, that only occurs (automatically) during atmospheric flight with the Attitude Hold autopilot engaged, so it should not have any effect on the RMS arm unless you plan to use it during atmospheric flight with Attitude Hold engaged. :) (Also, I have no idea how the XR5's CoG shifting could have any effect on the RMS add-on at all.)

In any case, you can easily prevent the XR5's center-of-gravity shifting entirely by editing your Config\XR5VaguardPrefs.cfg fie and setting APUAutostartForCOGShift=0:

Code:
#--------------------------------------------------------------------------
# Enable autostart of the APU when the ship's autopilot or automated flight
# control systems need to shift the ship's center of gravity (this is necessary
# during reentry and on landing approach in an atmosphere). If you are an
# experienced pilot and want to always manage the APU yourself, set this to
# option to 0 (disabled).
#
# The default value is 1 (APU auto-startup ENABLED)
#
# 0 = APU auto-startup for COG-shift disabled
# 1 = APU auto-startup for COG-shift enabled
#--------------------------------------------------------------------------
APUAutostartForCOGShift=0

With that change, you can engage the Attitude Hold autopilot and CoG shifting will not occur unless you manually turn on the APU. So all you have to do is leave the APU off and CoG shifting will not occur while Attitude Hold is engaged. Or you could even leave APUAutostartForCOGShift enabled and simply turn the APU off while Attitude Hold is engaged. You will hear a warning callout in that case, but further CoG shifting would not occur.

Be advised, however, that it consumes much more RCS fuel to hold attitude in an atmosphere with CoG shifting offline.

In Orbiter COG - is the center of vessel's coordinates. If you have shifted COG, the location of URMS attachment will shifted also? But URMS don't know about it... So will be a troubles I guess.
Try to attach the URMS to stock Atlantis for example. It shifts COG during staging. You can tune URMS location in cargo bay in launch configuration. After ET separation URMS will be shifted out.

I just attached the URMS to the XR5 payload bay, and I didn't have to worry about it. I can manually cycle the COG to it's limits, and the arm stays put.

No worries. :D

During shifting of COG no visual effects. You must save and load scenario - after loading scenario URMS location will be changed :)
If you setup URMS with rail path you will see shifting of URMS on COG shift in dynamic.

Ah, Thanks for that explanation! I was wondering about that myself since I never noticed that before as I didn't notice any immediate issues with the RMS and COG.
Now, One thing I found I like to do with the URMS is to mount it on the helmet of a Ummu as an alternative to the default grappling abillity it has!

It's pretty nifty!

I think it's safe to say it's both. It's from the Bomb MFD

Seems to have used a submarine for a bomb model.

Ahhhh ... ok. I'll have to play around with that. By the time I get to a save point, I'm either in orbit, or back on the ground, so the CG is back to center.

Still, though ... wonderful addon!

I love this addon, now I can make my SSRMS actually attach things.

New version released. Now manipulator compatible with vessels which can shift it's COG (like Atlantis or CVEL based vessels)

Pros: Attaches to anywhere on any vessel (on both ends), can slide
Cons: Same limitation as U Cargo Deck (no mobile COG in base ship)
Review:
This is the best thing since sliced bread! It is by far the best RMS system I have ever seen. It can have any vessel as it's base, it can pick up any other vessel, at any point on it. You can make the vessel you're about to grab flash, so you know what you're doing. It can be any size. It can slide along it's base vessel. It's just as easy and polished as Kulch's other addons. In spite of it's inability to attach to the XR5 (because of the mobile center of gravity), it can attach to the UCD carrier, so that's acceptable. Incredible job!

Pros: Attaches to nearly anything and and grabs anything!
Cons: None at all!

Extremely impressive addon. It's one of the best addons yet to come out for Orbiter and proves that Yuri Kulchitsky is one of the best addon authors of all time for Orbiter! It's controls are smoother than you would expect and has many things you can configure such as a beginning and end point for the base of the RMS to slide back and forth to. It's just like what the Robotic arm of the ISS does on it's rail (A scenario is included which configures the RMS to do that on the ISS). It includes size/Scale configuration and has several different cameras on it through which you can view your RMS operations allowing you much precision with it!

Pros: Works on nearly every platform
Cons: We still don't have world peace

Two hundred and eighty some odd downloads in less than two days! This says volumes alone. The Orbiter community is so privileged to have an add-on developer with this kind of skill and talent. With the fantastic add-ons Yuri's already made, I'm a bit hesitant to say it - but this might be his best yet. Well done, and may you continue to be interested enough to keep developing.
