    Launch News Ariane 5 (VA241) : SES-14 (with NASA GOLD payload) & Al Yah-3 : Jan. 25, 2018

Well, let's hope the investigation turns up a root cause, so they can iron it out then.

    Updates Tiangong 1 reentry

If I get hit with falling space junk I would certainly hope to be remembered on OF. I doubt any of you would know it was me, though. You'd see my real name in the news but probably nobody would connect it to my user name...I would be an unsung lost Orbinaut. :(

So I have discovered a new beer I like, Sam Smith from Tadcaster, England. Do any Brits actually drink this, or is it just what they pass off to Americans?

Cue the horns, "wah wah"... ---------- Post added at 06:07 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:04 PM ---------- Even when the prize is claimed, so what? It's been like what, 14 years since Spaceship1 went suborbital, and we're still waiting for rich people to start taking suborbital...

Harsh Mistress is one of my all time favorite books as well. As for the AI, Heinlein wrote that in an era long before the whole cyberpunk genre was conceived, and certainly before it started becoming a real-life thing that we are all living through currently. Things like social media simply...

This is why I try to never read the books before the films or TV shows come out. I find that people who read the book first are never happy with the adaptation.

News Red Arrows ejector seat firm guilty over RAF Scampton death

I'm interested in what kind of a parachute mechanism depends on a single nut and bolt not being overtightened; doesn't sound like a robust system to begin with. Then there's the unintended firing of the seat. Surely something or someone failed there. Ejection seat are necessary to save aircrew...

Launch News SpaceX Falcon Heavy Demo Mission (1330-1630 EST 6th Feb. 2018)

This is why when you are a wealthy James Bond villain you build your own launch facilities and hire your own henchmen...er...work force.

Watching Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams Ep. 3 right now on Amazon Prime. I always wonder why in futuristic dystopian settings people seem to live in such cool places while here in the real world we just have to settle for the usual house or apartment. I mean, I guess not having to worry about...

We should start a contest: if it hits your car or your house, all of OF buys you a beer, one from each of us.

Well, the book in the above post was written in the Apollo era and uses English units. However, it also uses something you likely haven't seen in KSP or Orbiter: canonical units, such as earth radii and so forth. There is good reason for it, when you go through the text and problems.

Excellent book, once you get used to the units.

    News Hawaii false nuclear alert

That is really only one possible scenario. ---------- Post added at 06:46 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:33 PM ---------- That movie, technical errors aside, stands the test of time as a great and terrifying film.

Horrible news. The Cranberries had recently made a comeback album, too. Her voice was a big part of the 90s.

    News Hawaii false nuclear alert

It really depends on what kind of attack it is and who is attacking. If Hawaii is attacked by North Korea, it will be at most a handful of poorly-aimed, low or medium yield warheads, in which case your biggest worry is fallout and wind direction, as you will most likely be outside of any major...

    News Hawaii false nuclear alert

My first thought upon hearing this story was, "Hawaii's government actually has a text alert for a missile attack?" The whole thing sounded like a hoax to me. There's a youtube video out there of a kid playing a prank on his family by playing back a tape of a civil defense warning that a...
