I haven't read Robinson's Mars Trilogy yet; it's on my list. But I did read his novel Ice Henge, which is a fantastic story, really loved it. It doesn't officially take place in the same universe as the Mars Trilogy; it's very similar but Robinson says it's not really the same, some things were...

    Launch News Atlas V GOES-S Mission (March 1, 2018, 22:02-00:02 UTC) AV-077

You know, I've read plenty of explanations about it, but I still find it amazing that somebody can photograph that super bright exhaust plume and still get decent exposure on the much darker background like that.

Updates NASA New Horizons Mission Updates

Interesting thing about that article is that it doesn't mention the Voyagers' propulsion systems. I don't even know if they have functioning propulsion systems anymore, and had they known early enough, would they have been able to budget any propellant for side missions like New Horizons has...

If nobody she knows was there, I imagine she doesn't tell the story at all and keeps quiet about it out of embarrassment. Then again, it's been a year; if she didn't learn anything from that she might no longer be around to tell any stories at all. ---------- Post added at 05:36 PM...

News Moon to get 4G mobile network

Maybe this makes sense if you have several rovers/landers within range of the cells, which can use lightweight and lower power phone type transceivers instead of high power radios and high gain antennas, leaving the heavy power and bandwidth work for the cell station. But it sounds like a...

Humor The Beast from the East!

I always thought that was weird, given that most of the UK is at a much higher latitude than most of the US, and here in DC, technically part of the "South", we expect to get clobbered at least once every winter with a heavy snowstorm. So far we avoided it this year, but we did get a brutal deep...

    Retro Cool Technology

That's interesting; those tape drives were both made in the 1990s. I didn't know they were still making them then. Apparently they are good for archival data storage. In the 1980s many home computers used cassette tape drives for data storage, before floppy disks and hard disk drives became...

    Retro Cool Technology

Retro tech? Now THIS is cool retro tech. The Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California, restores ancient machines to full working order. Here they have a fully operational IBM 1401 from 1959 and they figured out how to run Fortran on it, which it was never designed to do. This thing...

That wiki page is actually pretty amazing. The pigeon transfer even blew away the car in one of the races. And then there is the macabre photo of the dead pigeon with the caption, "an example of packet loss".

Everything ever made by Boston Dynamics is nightmare fuel. And I bet they do it on purpose to get more publicity. If you build something that looks like a Cylon or a Terminator you are guaranteed to get attention. I'm surprised their machines haven't turned up in any movies yet.

I wonder how quickly the sun will destroy the finish and upholstery in that car... Did they instrument the space suit to gather some data?

Only if you reverse the polarity of the tachyon field and inhibit the pattern buffer arrays. Note that this only works with dilithium that is 99% pure or better.

Maybe it was bots? I often wonder about the veracity of that number. Maybe one of the admins can explain how that is tallied up. I imagine that this site attracts its share of bots, though.

That sort of thing is becoming popular now. On 8-bit Guy's youtube channel he often talks about people developing bran new games for long dead platforms such as the Atari 2600 and the Commodore 64 and even more obscure ones, and he recently published a game of his own.

Anyone remember that episode of Star Trek TNG where they found an old Ford truck floating around in space and, after bringing it aboard the hangar deck, LaForge managed to start the engine up?
