Well I went to the Philadelphia Eagles parade with some of my family this morning, stood around in the bitter cold for about 3 hours. Had a great time when the double decker busses rolled past us with the players up top. People were tossing them cans of beer and they were throwing hats and flags...

Launch News SpaceX Falcon Heavy Demo Mission (1330-1630 EST 6th Feb. 2018)

Are you sure it's not really a Tide commercial? That space suit is awful clean...

Launch News SpaceX Falcon Heavy Demo Mission (1330-1630 EST 6th Feb. 2018)

Of course I had to be at work and miss this live :beathead: But watching the replay...I'd have to say that this may go down as one of the coolest moments in space history so far. The double rocket landing was epic, and the live stream of the car in space, well, now they're just showing off! I...

News Apache helicopter has crashed in residential area in south Japan

First of all, this is not the Basement. Second, the story reports that this was a Japanese SDF helicopter, which happens to be US-made, not a US helicopter.

Launch News SpaceX Falcon Heavy Demo Mission (1330-1630 EST 6th Feb. 2018)

Now that the car has the spacesuit it looks even more like the car in Heavy Metal. I'll bet that's what inspired it.

What music are you listening to?

RIP Dennis Edwards. This is one of the most "America in the 1970's" things I have ever heard.

    Updates Mars Science Laboratory (Curiosity)

Weird that this thread is so dead of late... Had to share this, a panorama shot from Curiosity. The winter weather on this part of Mars was very calm and so the air was very clear when this was shot, and it's stunning. What amazes me is the blue sky! I had read before that the sky on Mars...

It is interesting that the Clan invasion was supposed to impose the Clan way of life upon the soft Inner Sphere, and instead it wound up basically diluting the Clans' "purity". Fictional universes like that always fascinate me, especially when contributed to by numerous authors. A counter...

I don't recall ever getting to the end of Stackpole's storyline, so I never knew how it all wound up.

Getting Stackpole's name wrong is what happens when I don't look things up first...but I did like his books, mainly because he had that one nameless assassin running around, that guy was my favorite character. I also really liked the Grey Death Legion stories.

Where do you keep your list? Where did you leave a review? Amazon? My favorite military SF has been Heinlein (of course), Jerry Pournelle (sometimes with Larry Niven), John Steakly (Armor), and Joe Haldeman (The Forever War). A few others, but those are the biggest for me so far. I think the...

News NASA’s Long Dead ‘IMAGE’ Satellite is Alive!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMAGE https://image.gsfc.nasa.gov/ Doubtful, but make up your own mind from the links. It seems to me that the controllers tried everything they could before giving up on the mission.

Launch News SUCCESS! "Still Testing" RocketLab's Electron 2nd Flight (14:30 NZDT, 21st Jan. 2018)

Actually, without an atmosphere and a good sun shade during lunar daytime the sky would be stunning even with lots of city lights on the ground. Imagine what the night sky must look like on the far side of the moon. Orbiting objects would be the biggest hindrance I would think.

    Launch News Ariane 5 (VA241) : SES-14 (with NASA GOLD payload) & Al Yah-3 : Jan. 25, 2018

So that means two potential problems to be resolved: the anomaly itself and the RSO's response to it.

Launch News SUCCESS! "Still Testing" RocketLab's Electron 2nd Flight (14:30 NZDT, 21st Jan. 2018)

Nah, it's just a poorly planned publicity stunt that has apparently angered astronomers as an orbiting source of light pollution, according to one story I read. The car is dumb, too, but it's dumb in a cooler way.
