Well I have tried several values with different planets/moons. The differences are clearly visible in world studio, but not at all inside Orbiter itself. Maybe a bug relating to Vista?
For example this extreme value of microtex_lev=999999999 had no effect what so ever inside the simulator.
Some comments:
+ No Windows Vista planet leaving CTD in this version
- No way, it seems, to have textures cover the whole visible area:
This was done in earlier Orulex versions. Here's a comparative picture from an Orulex version released late last year:

1. The Windows Vista CTD bug raised its ugly head once again. It is the same problem that's been lurking in different Orulex versions for a long time. However the first alpha version you posted in the beginning of this thread worked for...
I wanted to thank you Artlav as soon as i could: it seems that the Windows Vista CTD problem is gone (hopefully for good). But I also wanted to ask about this:
This is Europa and I get these boxed textures at all altitudes. The next one is Ganymede:
