    Supersonic car targets 1,000mph

Modern bermuda rigs can go as close as 30° to the apparent wind. The trick is to balance the rig and the keel forces. Sailboats have large keels for a reason. ---------- Post added at 05:31 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:25 PM ---------- Wasn't there an "unofficial" record attempt...

    Supersonic car targets 1,000mph

If you sail closer than 90° to the wind, your apparent wind is faster than the true wind speed.

Being buried with weapons isn't proof that the person was using them. The only "Viking chieftain" found buried with an actual ship turned out to be female too. ---------- Post added at 12:50 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:47 PM ---------- Weapons are a symbol of power and don't...

I was a bit surprised that the theory that he got his name from the effect of his favorite berries didn't make it to his Wikipedia page. Btw "Viking" is the name for the raid and "Vikings" is the name for the participants. The people are called "Norse" or "Danes".

The Faroes are a bit behind the rest of Europe in this field. We still don't have a fancy abbreviation but just call it "Bilsýn" (transl. "Car Inspection"). It's carried out at an increasing rate, and reaches 'annual' when the vehicle is 8 years old IIRC. But we have increased the level of...

News NASA Destroyed Hundreds of Mystery Tapes Found in a Dead Man’s Basement

Most problems relate to binder degradation. In severe cases the tape sticks to the reader head. I've had 2" tape break because of that. I can't remember how much tension it used, but it was way more than you'd think.

News NASA Destroyed Hundreds of Mystery Tapes Found in a Dead Man’s Basement

Our national broadcaster decided to digitize the old archives of old audio tapes, and bought some fancy equipment for the job. The initial annual funds set aside to do the actual work lasted less than two months. After the first year they had completed less than 2% of their target. If you can...

General Question Does Earth spin & Orbiter simulate atmospheric flight?

My first thought was that he was trying to debunk flat-earthers. I didn't consider that anyone would be so detached from reality that they would try to make a bunch of space-simmers help prove the Earth is flat. I still have no first hand evidence of his intentions, and IMHO it doesn't matter...

It's the butterfly effect, i.e. your mathematical model is too crappy to replicate reality. ;)
