Launch News Atlas V to Launch WorldView-4

I think it's one of the fine-pointing gyros used for high-resolution imaging... without it, they can't get their advertised resolution. So yeah, mission kill, even though it's not a LOV.

Kinda ironic, seeing as this volcano is the successor of Krakatoa... Which lost 2/3 of its above sea level mass back in 1883. Thankfully, Anak Krakatau is much smaller than its predecessor.

News Changes to the SpaceX BFR rocket.

Hmph. The rate at which Elon keeps changing the design makes me extraordinarily skeptical of anything he says until such time as they commit to production facilities.

SpaceShipTwo, VSS Unity - Fourth Flight - 12-13-2018

Again, SS2 is already vacuum optimized, so a nozzle extension wouldn't produce noticeable performance gains... especially given the already low specific impulse of the hybrid motor, the increased mechanical complexity, and the fact that it would likely disrupt the entry aerodynamics. Honest...

SpaceShipTwo, VSS Unity - Fourth Flight - 12-13-2018

Besides, they're launching from, what, 45,000 feet? That's pretty close to vacuum, compared to sea level... only 2-3 psi, if memory serves, versus 14.7 at sea level. So they can run an altitude-optimized nozzle from the outset. Blue Origin is launching from much closer to sea level, so they use...

San Francisco uses a similar set up on the bridges coming into SF... You have to pay to enter, but departure from the city is not charged. There are ways into the city without paying the toll, but you have to detour around the entire southern half of San Francisco Bay.

Despite all the time I've spent around airliners and airplanes, I've only smacked my head hard enough to see stars twice... Once on the pre-conditioned air unit beneath a jetbridge, and once on the vent mast on the #2 engine of a Jetstar when coming out from under the wing during a tire change...

Launch News SpaceX Falcon 9 CRS-16

Failsafe. The booster has to actively steer towards land so that, should a failure like this happen, the stage won't be a threat to people or property ashore.

Launch News SpaceX Falcon 9 CRS-16

Yeah, but was the stage designed for an impromptu bath in saltwater just after engine shutdown? I suspect that particular booster is going to wind up as scrap... or, with a little luck as a ground trainer for maintainers.
