    Project Arcturus Lunar Lander

That accent-module seems a bit overkill for something that only needs to land on the moon and return to lunar orbit.

That money though it could be argued leads toward future productive spaceflights.

Flight Question Landings on bodies with negligible atmospheres

I've got lunar landings well covered, as its quite easy to comfortable deorbit at a place of your choosing, and it much easier to perform braking burns to slow yourself down. The problem I was having when I made this post was with bodies like Mars, that have atmospheres just thick enough to...

    IMFD Back to Cape Canaveral

You know that actually works a lot better. I'd only had Aerobrake open really to just eyeball the trajectory on the map view during the phases of positive lift, but IMFD gives a much more accurate indication.

    IMFD Back to Cape Canaveral

I've been playing with inverted re-entries from the Moon over the past few days in an XR5 and I've managed to come to much the same conclusions as others have in this thread: a PeA of about 70 or so is the best way to go and they're dastardly hard. The benefit to the technique though is that you...

That is astonishing! Can't wait to test it!

    Music Interchange Thread

I don't know of many pieces of music that really stand out from the rest of them, but this is one of those few that does, by miles. I was first introduced to it over a year ago and I feel it really should be passed along. Sadly this is the only recording I've ever found of this particular...

Tutorial ORBITER Tutorial Series for Beginners: The Application of Orbital Mechanics

They're really great videos Tex, and the do a great job of illustrating the major concepts that one needs to understand to dock with an orbiting vessel. Being just a bit critical, I think the first video starts off with a little bit of information overload, as it describes a lot about orbit...

Question Need help making an efficient TMI burn with a low impulse craft

Thank you, this sounds like a much more sensible approach to the problem, and it also now gives me the option to toy around with some staging between kicks. Any rules of thumb about how many days in advance I should start the sequence, or rather, how critical is my timing? Would TransX suffice...

An SSTO as "God and Robert Heinlein intended".

Doesn't space flight have to become routine before people will trust it enough to own personal vehicles to orbit? This is starting to sound like the story about the chicken and egg.

Question Need help making an efficient TMI burn with a low impulse craft

So I've been experimenting with a Frankensteinian monster of a stack that in theory has enough deltaV budget to make an Earth ejection burn towards Mars that I've plotted out in TransX. Now the problem is that the stack only has an initial acceleration of 1m/s, and so to make the 3500ish m/s...

An SSTO as "God and Robert Heinlein intended".

Personaly owned SSTO's? I can hardly afoard to fill up my Citroen V6's tank days. I'd hate to imagine the bill from Grumman for filling up the tank on my SSTO! And not to nitpick here, but railguns or cannon aren't exempt from the law of conservation of energy. You would need quite a large...

Poll Which is the best Dan-Steph Add-On in your opinion?

UMMU and Orbiter Sound are so essential to the Orbiter experience I can't imagine not using them. UCGO had me sold with just the Arrow, as its a ship that so far, I've yet to see matched by any other add-on when it comes to interplanetery flights. The DGIV only comes in last because I've been...

An SSTO as "God and Robert Heinlein intended".

I agree with you all, on orbit refueling is quite necessary to move forward, and the dangers don't seem too difficult to overcome. I'm just curious about how anyone plans on getting the fuel up to orbit in the first place. Well curious, and slightly concerned that someone is then going to...

An SSTO as "God and Robert Heinlein intended".

Wouldn't this all be better achieved by a purpose built earth-moon "ferry", with cheap capsules to ferry crew back and forth to such a vessel? Without the mostly dead weight of a heat shield, and all the cacophony of other systems a SSTO would require? I have to say, it seems like trying to use...

    Orbiter Video Thread

For a flight done on just a whim its very nice, and you've had far better luck at a direct re-entry with the XR2 than most of my attempts which end up with a rapid explosive deceleration about 56km up.

An SSTO as "God and Robert Heinlein intended".

Begging your pardon, but I'm having trouble here. If you can refuel the SSTO and go to the moon, why not develop a TSTO that can be refueled in orbit and also go to the moon. Surely it would have the advantage of being a smaller mass being sent to the moon? Which then begs another question, how...

    Question Trip to Venus

In my opinion, there's no better way to get to grips with Trans X than Flytandem's tutorials. http://flytandem.com/orbiter/tutorials/ With these tutorials he covers about 90% of the situations you'll use Trans X for. There are both text and pictures tutorials and also narrated video tutorials.
