    Project Trajectory Optimization Tool Development

Arrowstar, Just a thought... I think I have an idea why your tool can't find a solution to the Cassini mission : The problem might be the Deep Space Maneuver that occurred midway between the 2 Venus flybys. Basically the 2nd flyby doesn't occur at the same spot as the 1st encounter - so in...

    Project Trajectory Optimization Tool Development

Arrowstar, (not a criticism - just to make sure I have everything right - or possibly where I got it wrong) I've been playing a bit with your Trajectory Optimization Tool and found myself a little confused by it.. Let me explain : I'm trying to reproduce the cassini mission.. I didn't run...

IMFD dV Oscilation and target gravity sources

Ah ! Believe it or not - it does make sense now ! Let me see if I got that right : I'm not influenced by Titan - Saturn is ! and since I'm looking at Saturn - and Saturn is wobbling a bit (because the barycenter of the Saturnian system isn't the geometric center of saturn) the dV fluctuates in...

IMFD dV Oscilation and target gravity sources

I'm surprised a function to ask for a solution for an intercept is less sophisticated than a real time display ! Personally, I wouldn't mind waiting 10 secs.. 30 secs, .. Or whatever it takes - to get the right vectors to properly intercept a target (and then to AutoBurn it !) Not that I mind...

IMFD dV Oscilation and target gravity sources

That's it ! That'll teach me not to look into the "mod" options for the IMFD option of the day ! Exactly what I was looking for ! Thanks a lot ! --Ivan PS : Mind it, only been using IMFD for 3 days - so I may come up with more stupid questions !

IMFD dV Oscilation and target gravity sources

All, I have a couple of questions here.. I'm redoing the cassini mission (just for fun) and noted that : - While en route between Jupiter and Saturn, the IMFD/Intercept dV (source=self) seems to oscilate on a ~14 day basis with a magnitude of +/- 2m/s with the baseline eventually increasing...

Songs to listen to while flying

I like Albedo 0.39 by Vangelis when Orbitering (is that a verb ?) --Ivan

    Thank you

Actually, I'm pretty sure I could have read this in the documentation ;) As far as the physics is concerned, I'm pretty sure it's quite accurate (at least as far as newtonian physics is concerned (including an n-body system).. As far as non-newtonian physics are concerned (What the heck ...

    Thank you

Well.. I didn't know the Lagrange points where in it.. (I'm discovering this as I go..) But for some reason, I wasn't really doubting it ;) Thanks! --Ivan (Still learning).. ---------- Post added at 02:47 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:35 AM ---------- (Posting to myself.. I know...

    Thank you

Oh.. I'll do it ;) Hey.. I started a couple days ago - Don't expect me to become an accomplished space pilot in 2 days ;) But I'm working on it ! (The thing I was trying to say is that I appreciate the work of those who did this - because it helps me understand things better.. I know I only...

    Thank you

Ah ! Thanks! But gracious.. I'm already having troubles with all the modern tech computerized nav helps ;) But it's nice to know I can eventually (pretend to) turn myself into one of those early explorers and pioneers. No doubt, trying to perform a rendez vous using star maps, Ephemeris & a...

    Thank you

Ah.. That'd be an interesting add-on I think (IF not already done) : Star navigation ! Or like the Apollo 13 return.. When (according to the flick - don't know about what really happened) used the sun as a ref point for the re-entry interface burn.

    Thank you

But when you think about it.. Being able to connect with an object traveling in circles at more than 4500 Mph with less than 1 inch precision (and you starting at ~1000 Mph (earth rotation)).. And knowing they ACTUALLY do this for real (it's not just a game - it happens for REAL) - and being...

    Thank you

I just picked up on Orbiter again after a few years hiatus.. By then I had only managed to try to fire the thing up and maybe get a couple of times in orbit... Got the latest version a couple of days ago.. Watched a couple of the instructional scenarios (scenarii ?).. Decided to try it...

Question Post your built-in challenge scores

I haven't turned on 'oblate earth' mode yet. I'm going to stick with a round earth for the time being I think (PS : I *did* watch the 2010P1 demo with non spherical rendez-vous.. but I'm not there yet !) Frankly hadn't though of launching late (or rather behind) and then just keeping a low...

Question Post your built-in challenge scores

#1 : 5829.47 Not an exceptional score.. But it was my 4th attempt at docking with the ISS - (2 failed miserably, 1 test run.. And 1 in the Challenge) Here is what I do now : - Start with a low profile ascent (~100K Alt, 380K AP at MECO) - Adjust Ecc at next AP (350/380 usually good enough) -...
