Ares V Could Launch Giant Telescopes

With all the vibration, NASA could end up with the world's first orbital kaleidoscope.;)

The JWST will have a 6.5m mirror, weights half as much as Hubble and will be launched by a "small" Ariane V rocket.

It is not like this justifies the Ares V at all.

This doesn't even talk about the JWST. It is talking about the Advanced Technology Large-Aperture Space Telescope (ATLAST) and the Single Aperture Far-Infrared Telescope (SAFIR). Let the Ariane launch the "little" stuff. These telescopes are far more beefer.

But are these better? And if they are, are they so much better than the smaller stuff? ;)

Don't confuse Ares V with Ares I. The thrust produced by the SRBs on Ares V will be an even lower proportion of the total thrust than for the STS stack. Therefore any accellerations due to thrust oscillations will be proportionally less. There is also a very large mass damper (ie, fuel tank) between the SRBs and the payload, just like STS.

The SRB thrust oscillations are not a new problem with solid rocket motors. They only became a problem on Ares I because a solid rocket motor is used as the primary propulsion.

You're not entirely wrong C3PO. NASA has said it wants to use Ares I as a satellite launcher although it's in the Delta IV Heavy weight class (25mT to LEO) but this is a debate best left to the many Ares threads.
With the "stick" then the shaking does become a problem satellite, or capsule up top.

I've gotta stop posting in my lunch brake.
Indeed you do. Because then you might realize that a brake is a deceleration hardware while a break is an event.

Where the hell do they come up with these cool acronyms?! Seriously!

Everyone says that I eat too fast, so.... ;)

I think most government program names are derived from the desired acronyms:)

"We've wanted a new space telescope for so long...at last it looks like we get one!"

"Dude...that would be a great acronym! ATLAST!"

"What could it stand for?"

"Hmm...how about...well the S and T could be Space Telescope."

"Yeah...and the A and T could be Advanced Technology."

"So what can the L and A be?"

"Well, it is big, so let's say it is Large Aperature!"

"Advanced technology large aperature space telescope... sweet, we got it!"
