Updates LRO/LCROSS News and Updates

Meh, it will go up sooner or later.

I guess it may be a sign of good health for the space launch industry that demand for launchers is high. A little more visible signs of competition would be nice, but the likes of SpaceX are still relatively new to the industry.

Maybe we need some GNU-licensed 'common launcher' that could be easily built by startups or homebrew people...

A few months is not that big of a deal. More time to prepare. At least the mission was not canceled altogether.

Hmmmm ... that's going to take an awful lot of sugar ... and I'm not sure PVC pipe comes big enough.

More surprising for me was the news that the X-37B OTV was ready for flight. I hadn't heard anything about it recently.

not that surprised. its due to the damn war. no wonder they waste money on useless crap:blink:

No, it has nothing to do with the war. Apparently it's a research payload, a spaceplane prototype. Which *is* a waste of money, because any military mission it (or, more accurately, a vehicle built with technologies derived from it, since it's a prototype) could possibly carry out would be better performed by either sattelites or aircraft, or both. And even if it were an operational, as opposed to research, payload, it still wouldn't have much to do with the war, as most military sattelites, AFAIK, are recon platforms, whose job is more to spy on everybody, rather than just those we happen to currently be at war with.

LRO/LCROSS launch delayed for the seventh time
Now "No Earlier Than" 2nd June.

....and what happened to the X-37B that stole the LRO launch slot back at the beginning of the year and was said to be "Ready to fly"? Not even listed on the schedules now...

Ho hum.

What we need is to cut the military budget. The US spends more on it's military budget than all the other nations combined.

The US government will continue to misplace the taxpayers money right up til the day that big rock ploughs into the earth at 30,000+mph.

I filled out a "put your name on the LRO" with my grandson's name. I've refrained from giving him the document (certificate) so far because of the delays. Good thing I thought enough ahead to have it printed on parchment.

Yes, well, national defense is the government's job after all. Exploring the moon isn't, really.

It is as well... but some national security stuff may be more urgent, and if you use a launch system that is mostly for the military, don't be surprised.

NASA should better have reserved the flight.

I think the bottleneck is the Atlas launch facilities and people. If there were more pads and some more crew members they might not hit these logjams. I guess it doesn't happen often enough to warrant the expense, though.

I suspect the actual problem is more, that Boeing's Delta IV is not really a comparable EELV to the Atlas V. The Delta IV is pretty rarely launching...

That's a good observation. I hadn't noticed that, but now that you mention it it seems worth looking into.

ETA: If this is the case, then it would seem the USAF's decision to go with two systems for the EELV was justified, since Delta IV problems won't leave them without a launch vehicle.

LCROSS impact on the Moon

I've been thinking about this for a while: don't you think that if indeed there is some ice on the crater in which LCROSS will crash... won't LCROSS contaminate that ice?!
If I were an astronaut living on the moon, I would not like to drink water from that crater......
