Hi All,

I just came across a reference to this on the Nasaspaceflight.com model building thread. http://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=1806.615 and thought I'd share it.

http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/3d_resources/index.html

It seems that recently some more models (and textures) have been added, many of which are high poly, but useful nevertheless. From a quick read of the useage guidelines it looks like they could be used in Orbiter.

Looking a little closer, the SRB file (which appears very large) has some useful stuff, a nice SRB model and texture, which can be opened in Anim8or with texture UV preserved (only scaling is required), as well as a low poly Astronaut.

Nice find! :)

As a quick test, I converted their LM to Orbiter's MSH format, see attached screenshot. The zip file containing the mesh and textures is here as the file is too big to be attached to this post: http://www.ibiblio.org/mscorbit/mscforum/index.php?topic=1911.0 This mesh it isn't very useful though as the AMSO LM is very much better...

Cheers

Nice find! Though as Tschachim mentioned, the LM of AMSO looks way better. However the Viking Mars lander and the Pistol Grip tool look nice. Especially the latter would be fancy to have on the EVA astronauts on the ISS/Shuttle!

See the restriction chapter about NASA logo too...

IMHO, that part of the liscense isn't legally binding. Any unclassified government document released is in the public domain. That would include any media from NASA. Government entities can't claim IP rights like private corporations can. That would be like the equivalent of the US Air Force seeking prosecution because someone used a likeness of their logo. Makes no legal sense. It's also why you see those annoying commercials on TV selling Obama "historical" plate collection using things like the POTUS logo. On the other hand, government contractors claim IP rights. Lockeed is especially overzellous with seeking thier cut of the artistic profits on likenesses of thier craft.

As for the models. I just downloaded and looked at them. None of them are especially accurate. Orbiter add-on models are a lot more accurate than any of the these 3ds NASA models.
