Request VASIMR powered lunar tug

Hmmm....simulating a VASMIR would require a custom DLL, since it involves changing Isp as thrust increases. Looks cool, though.

But the slow sprial out takes 6 months. All that time the tug has to remain prograde.
Above 100x, the default autopilots get unstable, put you into wild accelerations, and waste your fuel. Is there any way to fix this?

Someone will would have to create a custom autopilot, or have small thrusters(Fake) that work in high time acc.

Hmm...and who wants to wait 6 months for the mail to get delivered? Unless you're sending a steady train of cargo all one way and all anticipated in regular supply drops.

Because you can send more payload with VASIMR. Lunar colonists won't do conventional mail, they will have email that will reach the Moon in three seconds.

I don't think the tug is supposed to take cargo back with it.

In conceptual development stage by me: i only hope two things to occur:

1-An alliance with Nikolay Dimitrov (NickD) who has the code of the original USS Béküo, i hope he borrows me the code :speackcool:
2-A visit to the Costa Rican AdAstra Rocket laboratory for further information.

For the problem of keepin' prograde all the 6 f***ing months, Brian Jones (BrianJ) solved it with his wonderful IEATMFD

Six months to the moon!? Wow... Well, I guess that's all you can expect with 10 Newtons of thrust...

I have to say one thing: i don't know if NickD's code is cheated, but while Chang-Díaz announced a 30 days escape trajectory aboard the original USS Béküo, i've achieved it in less than 12 hours at minimal thrust. I don't know the engine treatment of the Béküo's engines (3 x VF 3000?). But i don't think that 4 x VF 500 engines only give 1 kg of thrsut. :LOL!:

That was an expression of speech. Means: Who wants to wait six months when I need stuff right now?

Because the stuff you need right now was shipped in six months ago and arrived yesterday. :P

Where can I find this IEATMFD?

I've seen the tread just now.
Of course i can share the source.
With few words - I made a custom function which calculates ISP, depending of level of thrust. I used a Trust/ISP chart, provided by AdAstra, and created a function, corresponding to a chart.
Everything is real.
About thrust - actually i have a parameter which can set thrust. In the package i provide, thrust is maybe 1000 times larger than real. It is because Orbiter hasn't yet a tools to calculate low thrust trajectories.
If you want, you can customize it to levels reported by AdAstra.

IEATMFD location

you can find IEATMFD link on the chapman challenge thread post # 132.

"you want practice with low-thrust spacecraft trajectories, I recommend trying either BrianJ's [ame="http://www.orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=3459"]Dawn v2[/ame], or download his IEATMFD (by the way BrianJ, you really should should upload that to Orbit Hangar, it is simply amazing!) and lower the thrust on a Chapman probe to 0.154N, and increase the ISP to about 29,000m/s."

( BTW, how do you do the quote thing in the box like I see on a lot of posts?)

Do you see a little speech bubble at the top of the editing box?
Highlight the text that you want to quote, and press that button.

Thanks T.Neo. Did you get the IEATMFD?

No, not yet, but I'll have to try it out sometime.

Any Feedback? :feedback:

Are there any info how high thrust can be achieved with VASIMR engines while still keeping decent ISP ~50000 m/s assuming electrical power is not a problem?
