I'm new to the forum but Ive been playing orbiter for a few years (by no means advanced but quite familiar). At this point like many of you I have downloaded a plethora of addons and I'm having a lot of trouble with missing pieces and conflicts, after a while I just can't keep track of what have and what I need to install something new. My solution up until now has been to just reinstall the base package and start fresh every couple of months. Is there a particular method that some of you more advanced orbiteers use, or is this problem just one of the pitfalls of the orbiter world? I searched the forums but not quite knowing the right terms, I couldn't find anything meaningful.

I got this one guys.

Jonesoft Generic Mod Enabler:

Learn to use it.
Learn to love it.

I keep my mods completely separated and even make some customization of my own that I can add and subtract at will.
It is really important to keep your vanilla installation clean, and this utility helps you do that.
Put mods in the "MODS" folder and organize them how you wish.

Thanks ACII, this looks great! It looks like it will really tidy things up. I am still not sure exactly what its doing though. Does it just merge the folders automatically? I would assume I still have to be thorough about reading documentation and such, it doesn't automatically edit config files and such does it?

No, it doesn't edit config files automatically. However, if an addon does need to modify a config file, just copy the file to the addon's folder and modify that copy, then enable the addon.

I will normally extract the normal addon to my MODS folder. i.e. AMSO 118

then if i make any cfg files changes I will make them in a new addon "AMSO Modified". This keeps the original addon intact.

As long as you keep the same directory structure that orbiter has, everything will go in the right place.

That way when I want to play my own modified version of AMSO, I will enable
1. AMSO 118
2. AMSO modified - to copy over the vanilla cfgs

if i notice any bugs that might be caused from my modifications, I just disable AMSO modified, and it is back to the original version.

The other nice thing is if you ever need to copy your addons from one Orbiter install to another, you just copy the "MODS" folder and everything goes with it.
