Space Shuttle Ultra 1.25 Revision B development

Development delays? I think those numbers are transposed. We might make April 2031 at this rate.

I better make sure this project is not active in 3210.... :(

Aren't we actually pretty close to a release now? I think we've gone through all the pre-release tickets, and the only thing left is the new shuttle mesh.

Yes. While I'm working on the mesh, maybe someone could handle tickets 27, 26 and 25. Maybe ticket 18 could be dealt with as part of the new mesh upgrade as thruster positions are going to change with the new mesh.

Tickets 27 and 26 should be easy as they're mostly just updates/proper implementation while 25 could be a bit tricky. You know that you have gotten it right when it shows up during the final minute of ascent. If required, I can link the flight deck video from STS-123(night launch and MECO) which shows the plasma outside Window 6.

New OMS pod. Still WIP but the only thing left is replacing the TPS schematic texture with the actual blankets and tiles.

That top photo looks horrible. What happened to it ?

Well, currently the main TPS part is just an accurate combination of two layouts (top/side) of the OMS pod TPS I found in a pair of NASA Shuttle MMT presentations from STS-117 left OMS pod assessment efforts after it was discovered that one of the corners on one of the AFRSI blankets had lifted up and bent backwards. Now I just need one good patch of AFRSI which can be duplicated and inserted as required over the layouts. Same goes for the HRSI/LRSI tile section.

Latest OMS pod work, now with almost all of the AFRSI blankets:

I liked it better before.

That old texture? The one that made AFRSI look like regular smooth FRSI? They stopped using FRSI on the OMS pods after STS-61C in 1986. In fact, Columbia was the only orbiter that ever flew with the original LRSI/FRSI covered pods. Starting with Challenger's OMS pods (LP01/RP01), the FRSI was replaced with AFRSI.

you can call it what you want, but I like the old one better.

What exactly about the new texture don't you like? If you could be more precise, I could address it.

I don't like the sharp gaps and the labels on the tiles. Also the blankets look too regular IMHO.

With "tiles" do you mean the graphical part? That's just a temporary map, guiding me on where to place everything.

How about this, I tried a new mapping technique.

Looks even less realistic now.

Well, if you're talking about the entire pod being covered in AFRSI, then actually not. Challenger's OMS pods (LP01/RP01) were actually covered entirely in AFRSI. Here's an on-orbit photo. They went back to LRSI tiles for STS-7 after discovering a few issues regarding the aeroloads on the forward section.

The last major configuration change introduced the now very familiar HRSI tile group to address overheating concerns due to vortices coming off the wings during entry and damaging that particular spot on the pods.

Yes, but each blanket also has a four cornered shape and is not having such folds like you used - rather many small squares.

Thanks, this is what I need to improve. How about this? The aft section shows the new blankets while the two forward sections show the current one.

Yes, that looks a lot better already. Would be interesting to see, how a small normal map could look there, to get the pillow-shape of the blankets better visible.

Also the blankets need to be more staggered, not so inline with each other. Kind of a brick effect.

I know what you mean. I'm working on that now.

This is what I got right now, which matches the TPS schematics I have very nicely, in fact I use it in AC3D.

A little too pronounced seperation between blankets IMHO.
