i was wondering, i know some of you have an installation of orbiter that works very well, i have as well, albeit some time ago. what install order have you used to run without crashing? what addons are mostly used?

Seven, I've tried several installers and finally decided to just re-do Orbiter now and then with a fresh reload. I concentrate more on the structure of my storage directory where I keep everything. With orbiter, re-installation is not such a big thing at all.

Especially if you experiment with new stuff a lot, important files WILL get occasionally corrupted. I always enjoy a fresh, new load, and putting things back in again. It makes me feel ... clean! :P

I can give you my install order but then I keep several variants of orbiter so I can go back several installs just in case:

yeah, after several crashes i have resorted to several folders that contain orbiter with addons such as Amso only,dg4 only, and so forth. maybe i wasnt as clear in my question. but to have 1 installation folder only-how best to install? and in what order to get all working well?

That's a good idea too. I'll admit I've got a backup of Orbiter with just what I consider core addons ;)

Well, the only advice I can give you for having one folder to contain all addons is this: use a system to switch the directory content between several installation "branches". I use version control tools for this and so far I never regreted it.

If you're interested in this technique, please take a look at the Common Orbiter/Object Installation development thread.

Yep. It depends on what you want to install. I keep three separate Orbiter Installations. One Installation is specifically for the Shuttle Fleet w/ Med Res KSC textures, and the other is for my fictional ships (DGIV, Deepstar, XR-5, SSBBs, etc...). The third is the 2009 Beta Version. For the Shuttle Fleet and the Special Addition Expansion Pack, you just need to follow the installation order that David413 includes in the package. Generally, you need to consider what the installation will change- especially with scenary (i.e. adding a building is less intrusive then adding a new texture, but does adding the building change the configuration file for your existing scenary). I keep all my downloaded packages in a separate folder too, and it is ordered by installation. This way, you have a library should you need to backout a change, and you have the ability to reinstall as needed.

Hope this helps!

thats exactly what i mean, what to change and not to change. as a side note....i can never get the gemini addon to work correctly, always a ctd.
never understand why

If you're wanting to keep all the addons in one installation, but are worried about them playing nice, I'd recommend the Mod Enabler that Oceanic has linked. (JSGME). You can install each package as a mod in a separate folder inside the main Orbiter directory and then "activate" and "deactivate" them as needed.

There are several troubleshooting techniques that can help.

Start with the orbiter.log and see if it's complaining of anything.
