Anyone seen the movie, Starflight One? Movie stars Lee Majors.... aka... Six Million Dollar Man. Premise is that a SST bound for Australia ends up in Low Earth Orbit, and a space shuttle, named Colombia, is used to rescue the passengers. After a partial succesful attempt, the space shuttle is re-launched after a record 2-hour turn around. Only happens in the movies.

No, and having read about it, I don't think I'd ever want to.

You know, I seem to recall seeing that when I was a little boy. Anything with Lee Majors in it was cool when I was like 8 years old.

During the cold spring mornings with storms raging outside, we'd sit in the basement for hours on end with Atari 2600 and Intellivision games and watch this movie over and over! This basement was cool, it had harvest yellow and puke green appliances and wall to wall shag carpeting. Some of the times it just served as a backdrop for mission control which we would set-up on our Apple ][ computers. This was in the day when the best of professional animation didn't even come close to present-day orbiter graphics.

Oh, you should watch the first episode of Buck Rogers... he goes to LEO, and remains frozen until someone finds him centuries later... it looks like US government was not interested in recovering his ship...

Starflight One is one of my favourite worst films ever. It is so unrealistic, it's actually funny. I loved it, when I was a child.

A hypersonic plane accidentally hits LEO, after it collieded with debries from a Saturn V sattelite launcher that was launched from Sydney. The Space Shuttle Columbia launches three times within a few hours to rescue the plane. And NASA almost forgot, that it had a second space shuttle in space.

The actual plane design was quite iconic. If I wasn't such a bad wing designer, I would have made an Starflight One Orbiter Add-on ages ago. ;-)

Here's the imdb page for Starflight: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086357/

No pictures, though, may have to google search for it.

Wasn't Buck flying the last of America's "deep space" probes?

Correct, it was always my impression that Col. Rogers was on a trajectory for the outer planets when he suffered his vehicle anomaly. So after 500 years, he would've been in interstellar space, where he was recovered by the flagship of Princess Ardala of the Draconian Empire, where he had his shot with her and he blew it. Silly Buck.

May have to start a thread just for that show alone. Two of the hottest women in sci fi history in one show, Erin Gray and Pamela Hensley...

I daresay make that 3 of the hottest women.. Add in #6 from bsg!

Well anyways, Yeh, I did the buck rogers thing, salvage one, 6 million dollar man, Ark II..

Now Ark II, that is the ultimate in dumb-ass stupidity. Makes starflight one look like moonraker 007!

It's pretty much the plot device for every sci fi story about deep space exploration, including 2001!

Spaceship heads for deep space.
Spaceship suffers serious casualty/anomaly.
Crew must adapt, improvise, and overcome.

And hilarity ensues...
