Oops - I'm feeling a bit char broiled!

I'm feeling a bit char broiled at the moment. I was trying out the CTV2 Lunar version on a mission to the moon. I successfully flew to and orbited the moon and after about 10 laps, I did my TEI. That's where I made my mistake. Despite the fact that I had more than enough fuel to enter Earth orbit, I opted for a direct descent splashdown. The burn was perfect and I did a perfect mid course correction and separated the capsule from the service module as I neared Earth. I hit the atmosphere and began to re-enter. I was just admiring the really nice re-entry heating/scorching effects when suddently the capsule broke apart into a collection of charred fragments!:rofl:Evidently I should have opted to enter Earth orbit and then re-enter at a much slower than lunar transfer velocity! On the other hand the break up visuals are excellent!:lol:

Great addon - works in 2010 no problem.

That whole site is a treasure trove of really good addons. It's primarily European space program stuff includng some really good Ariane addons. All the ones that I've tried seem to work perfectly in 2010.

Been using that as my 2nd preference of vessel for a while now, excellent indeed. I got through re-entry but forgot to deploy the parachute and hit the water rather too fast and ended up with a bottomless capsual :rofl:

I'm sure the crew was sporting neck braces after that one. It reminds me of how I belly landed Discovery once. When you're doing a manual landing, you need to hit CTRL-G to unlock the landing gear before pressing G to lower it. AutoFCS had me coming in for a near perfect landing and I had it in the back of my mind that I had to unlock the gear in order for the autopilot to lower it. I hit CTRL-G which inadvertantly locked the gear (after AutoFCS had already unlocked it) and it never lowered.:lol: By the time I realized my mistake, I was about 5 feet over the runway.

:lol: That was rather unfortunate :lol:. I've never been great at Shuttle re-entries, I tend to burn up too much fuel coming down from orbit and drop out of orbit at the wrong point and end up landing in the Atlantic ocean.
