I'm feeling a bit char broiled at the moment. I was trying out the CTV2 Lunar version on a mission to the moon. I successfully flew to and orbited the moon and after about 10 laps, I did my TEI. That's where I made my mistake. Despite the fact that I had more than enough fuel to enter Earth orbit, I opted for a direct descent splashdown. The burn was perfect and I did a perfect mid course correction and separated the capsule from the service module as I neared Earth. I hit the atmosphere and began to re-enter. I was just admiring the really nice re-entry heating/scorching effects when suddently the capsule broke apart into a collection of charred fragments!:rofl:Evidently I should have opted to enter Earth orbit and then re-enter at a much slower than lunar transfer velocity! On the other hand the break up visuals are excellent!
