Hi,

when an astronaut exits the airlock, he can only rotate, there is no forward thrust at all! Why? The turbopack has forward thrust but how do I reach it in the first place?? Can't they have turbopacks attached before leaving the airlock? I thought astronauts were supposed to be smart!

Is the idea to translation mode to move left right wherever? If so, that's twice as stupid!

Hold on there, you are missing some important information:

What astronaunt? I assume you mean UMMU's?

What version of Orbiter?

What have you tried to get your astronaunt to move towards the turbopack? I've found that translation for the UMMU works perfectly.

I just did a test, and translation with UMMU's work fine in orbiter 2010. Are you using '06 or previous?

Sorry if my post was confusing, I wanted to know how do I move FORWARD with UMMU, is that possible at all? Plus on the numeric keypad works only with the turbopack, minus doesn't work at all.

And then what? How do I move forward? Plus/minus on the numeric keypad doesn't work.

Once you're in translation mode using the "/" key, you can use the Num-Pad numbers 6 (to move forward) and 9 (to move back).

1 and 3 "strafe" left and right, while 8 and 2 more up and down.

All of this could have been avoided by taking a quick look at a remarkable file in the Doc folder called 'Orbiter.pdf.'

Read up on TRANSLATION MODE.

/ then 6 and you'll go forward.

Yeah, I read the help file where it says 6 is forward and 9 is back in translation mode but the thrust is so weak (as opposed to the turbopack and UMmu strafe and rotation) that I thought it's not working.

Thanks, now I can go burn up in the atmosphere!

A thruster with a given force at a given radius to your center may rotate you easily.
But can it accelerate you linear (where the radius can't help) the same way?
;)

Only if the direction of thrust is not perpendicular to the radius.

Fortunately Dan has created an UMMU-spacesuit that has thrusters centered always on your last breakfast

Yep, magical rotation without consequences.
It does make things easier, though. Have you ever tried docking with the Dragonfly or the Tranzit? They simulate translation effects with rotation thrusters.

Dragonfly - yes, have done.
Tranzit ??

Oh, there is another Orbiter-vessel with
I'm really excited about the Tranzit space tug and its built in CoG compensation.

AMAZING
I should give it a try

it may at first seem that forward and backward are slow but they aren't any slower it's just the visual movement doesn't look as dramatic. it's like simmering frogs, you'll be doing something and realize that you're 200 meters away from the ship, start flying towards it until you have "visual affirmation of movement" and you will find that you are approaching it at 5m/s and don't have any time to slow down!!!!!!! aarrrgh!!! if you use some outside camera angles from the side or something you will see that forward and backwards are quite fast indeed.

Yes, when I'm paying attention to distances displayed on the HUD it's obvious that I'm moving.

Why can't I see the 'virtual cockpit' of the UMmu when I press F8? It's the UMmu that comes with XR2... but when I use the UMmu that comes with DGIV I can see the interior of the helmet (which I feel is more immersive).
