P.S. I want guns. They could even be completely virtual, i.e. no collission or damage model required. Just a damage counter in an MFD, and a statistical probability of kill system. When someone has an intercept vector, your ship gets sent a warning, "you will be intercepted in 45 minutes". Someone see the message and would then log in and take control of the ship.

P.S. There are plenty of space shooters out there that already support multiplayer.

Use Vega Strike. You can even mod it to your requirements.

Orbiter is already fun without guns, and those guns that already exist here, are actually even without full scale combat a nice gimmick to the already existing fun.

So make one? Or add guns to Orbiter yourself and share with the community, I'm sure you're not alone in this desire. If Orbiter isn't everything you want it to be, add to it and make it so.

Actually, that is quite a lot to ask. :lol:

Think about it...Orbiter doesn't have a vessel-vessel collision model on its own. What damage model it has is entirely restricted to malfunction or reentry damage. No dedicated instruments exist for projectile guidance. There are no A.I. vessels to engage in combat. All of these things must exist for a practical simulation of space warfare. The Orbiter core itself is not intended to simulate combat. Furthermore, nothing like it has been attempted realistically. I'm not even sure if there has been an adequate study of its feasibility in real life. There is no established theory on what it would resemble. If it does ever come to be, it is doubtful that it will be remotely analogous to any form of combat ever attempted on Earth.

A small group of developers are attempting it now, if you'll wait patiently for it. If and when it is released, please don't take it for granted.

While I understand your frustration, you should by no means blame the community for not 'giving it out'. It is the opinon of many here that guns would not make Orbiter fun, while there are a few that do. If you can wait, as Izack said, go check out OBSP. Perhaps the fact that there is no space simulator with guns is a testament to why there has not been one.

Back on topic now. While I don't care either way about multiplayer, if there was one, I would want it to have a few things. Sharing cockpits is my primary want, as I enjoy doing so in FSX. Second on this list is, of course, time acceleration. I don't see playing with more than 4 or 5 people, so it needn't compensate for large quantities of players. I would also like some sort of Mission Control, similar to ATCs on VATSIM. While we all cope without one right now, I think it would greatly add to the fun of the simulation.

If I was playing orbiter online with others, I would think getting the simulator to preform well on all systems involved and not lagging about would be better than gimmicks. After all, I came here to play orbiter, not a shoot 'um up. Getting the heart of the game to transition flawlessly to all the players involved is the important thing. Launching to rendezvous with a friend in space to go exploring is what orbiter multiplayer should be about, not fluff like commerce or combat. Basics are the important thing. That why I still play UT99; it works, and it works well. The games that came after it are good, but it is the things that can be returned to again and again that make things fun.

In a similar vein, that's why time acceleration got so much attention here. Time accel makes interplanetary voyages of the non warp kind possible; not being able to control it at will would mess up everybody as they would have to fight to keep time moving at their pace. It would be horrible to have your reentry mucked with by some dude on his way to Mars; on the same token, it would suck to be the dude going to Mars with all the LEO people starting and stopping time acceleration. But a lot about this has already been said, so sorry.

As a way of saying thanks for skimming(or maybe reading though:lol this post, here is a recommendation for a game not Orbiter. Apologizes to Dr. Schweiger, but too much of anything is not enough.
If anyone needs guns, missiles, and cut-throat capitalism then go play Hardwar. It is even set on Titian if memory serves, though it is only atmospheric. The multplayer is a pain to get working, but you can still zip around getting attacked by virtual community of violent jerks in singleplayer. Which is a rough approximation playing in a server filled with violent jerks.

Granted there were many studies pertaining to space warfare, but I haven't seen any clear-cut objective analysis of the concept, unless I'm missing something, which is entirely probable. I'm no experienced researcher.

Also, specialised calculators don't exactly qualify is the type of simulator I meant, which was Orbiter or similar software with a combat module. (At the very least, Orbiter is a much bigger calculator, with a graphics engine attached.)

EDIT: Missed a few posts by failing to notice that a page had been added to the thread. I didn't know you were talking about nuclear war simulators. Still, those aren't simulations of combat in space, they are simulations of combat which uses vehicles which travel through space en route to their Earthly targets from their Earthly launch points.

Well, it can compare well to Global Conflict Blue 2, though it exchanges logistics for more weapon options.
