The capsule hits the ground a bit hard, doesnt it? I thought retro rockets were supposed to fire to slow it down before it hits the ground?

Those retro's only fire a the last moment. In fact the dust you see is probably kicked up by the retro exhaust, rather than by air pushed out from under the capsule.
