Hi fellow Obiter space simmers
Please forgive an old man for asking, but is there a way to get step by step instruction on how to install the add-on's for the Orbiter space flight simulation.
I just installed Orbiter 2010 P1. I run Windows XP Professional SP/3.
I am very new to this adding software to a programe like Orbiter 2010 P1.
Could anyone give me some help?

This Orbiter space flight sim is the best space flight sim I have seen.
My thanks to Dr. Schweiger and all who have spent the time and effort to make it such a great programs.
You can contact me HERE on the Orbiter web site.
Thanks
Regards

:welcome: to Orbiter-Forum!, Most addons just need their files extracting into your Orbiter's main directory(the same place as Orbiter.exe), though you should always check the readme for install instructions specific to the addon and to see if the addon requires any other addons to work correctly

To clarify woo482's point: A few add-ons need you to make minor alterations to some of the config files, and a few might actually overright some of those (or other) files, so it's always best to read any readme or other documentation file(s) that came with the add-on first, and make backups of any files they might replace. And some won't work by themselves; for instance the Soyuz launchers require the Soyuz TMA capsule, which is found in the ISS 3.2 add-on.

Ok
But the point I need help with is how you find the file and how you get the add-on file extracted and into the Orbiter Directory or get to the Orbiter .exe what ever that is?
I haver worked with files moving them around to different folders or make alterations to a file or folder.
This is what I ment by step by step

Thanks Xyon for the information you sent. I have a better understanding then I did before.
On the Techerclick introductory page which item explanes installing a add-on?
Can I save the Orbiter sound 3.5 to My Document folder and then install the sound
add-on?

as long as you make sure you have set it to install it to your root folder you can save the winzip files anywhere

None of those pages details installing an Orbiter addon. The point of linking you to them was to give you some education of Windows before we attempt to tackle the slightly more complicated process of extracting files from a .zip or .rar (or .7z) archive into your Orbiter folder.

I'm trying to avoid simply telling you what to do by giving you a giant list of instructions you won't understand, and instead try to provide the necessary background information and underpinning knowledge of how your operating system should be operated so that you can do it by transferring those basic computer usage skills.

Ok
So what are the steps to install the Orbiter 3.5 sound add-on to Orbiter 2010 P1?
I saved it to My Document folder. Bow what do I do, or should I ask?

Orbiter Sound 3.5 has its own installer, so you run it as application. Just open it, click on the "Browse" button and select the folder where you have installed the Orbiter 2010 P1, and click "OK". Then you click on "Install OrbiterSound 3.5" button, and after files have been copied, you choose "Yes" for "Activate OrbiterSound?" question.

In the OrbiterSound install process there should also be 1 or 2 questions about patching some old UMMU DLLs (or something like that). Just answer "yes".

No, it's either in UCGO or DGIV2 installation, and not in OrbiterSound.

Indeed. The patching was to remove the "UMMU 1.5 bug", which is not applicable to OrbiterSound.

TO: Orb
GREAT news.
I followed your instructions and now I have the Orbiter sound 3.5 installed.
You made it so simple to do.
Thanks so much for your help.
I am new at working with installing add-ons. Im used to just put the CD in the drive tray and let the pc do the rest.
Thanks Again
