I recently saw Probe Monument by loru at the hangar. I would like a "Platinum Bust of Dr.Schweiger" addon that possesses qualities of a vessel, possibly having the ability to "morph" into any vessel installed. I would like it to have a "speech" plugin with favorite quotes and words of wisdom from the creator. The lips will have to be animated for full effect. The immediate base is to be devoted to him, but it should be extensible (like the Stanley Cup) so that every year at a certain date all newly contributing addon developers send in a scanned image of their hand to be imprinted on the base. Veteran addon developers would be included in the initial release.

I'm dead serious. I'm not joking.

Wow, would love to see something like this!
I just don't know about the animated lips, what's with that? :hmm:

Animated lips... Morphing...

I've seen some good animation in some of the addons I've looked at so far. I must admit I don't know the extent of how far this can be taken at this time.

Maybe animated lips could be considered creepy. Dr. S. must have influences that he admires and respects. This would be a cool vehicle to share them with. This speech plugin could be extensible with subsequent releases or speech packs with additional quotes. A separate folder in the Sound directory might contain them. I'd be just as happy if the lips didn't move.

Morphing into vessels is probably overkill. The bust would be shape A, the intended vessel shape B. The resulting vessel's skin would only need to reflect that of the bust's. The time period and quality of the transitionary period would determine the complexity and feasibility of the feature. Maybe morphing into just one ship (his favorite) would simplify matters.
This vessel could demonstrate "super" qualities above and beyond its standard release. Again I would be happy without any animation.

Stripes next to your avatar for various contributions are great. I'm not being critical when I say that they strike me as being a little militaristic. A handprint on the base would imply that you've had a "hand" in contributing something to orbiter in a different way.

I would be happy without animation, and without hands on the base of any sort. I would like to be able to place it any where within the orbiter universe; in orbit next to the ISS, Brighton Beach, even Liberty Island next to Lady Liberty. The speech pack was an afterthought. A way to get to understand Dr. S a little better. My Birthday is in four days. My family is planning something, I can tell. They're going to be hard pressed to beat the present Dr. S. has given me this year.

If no one thinks this would be cool I apologize.

I've been toying with the idea for a couple of weeks. We honor creative people this way. It's not like there isn't precedent.

As to the other comment, herbal remedies for the sick and dying also ameliorate depression.

It's a nice thought.

But IMHO the greatest homage you can pay is to use Orbiter and try to add your small piece to making Orbiter even more enjoyable (addons, advice, discussion or just pleasant company).

Personally I don't like the idea of making statues of living people. That club has some really unpleasant members. But that's only my personal view, and I don't want that stopping anyone from making such an add-on.

Why not a simple block of concrete. Or bulletin board of contributors. Something like a small walk-in building or anteroom or vestibule. With a chart on the wall displaying who is who!

Uhm something like that.

Something like that. Perhaps just a base named after him would be nice. Yes! That would work. If I had the time I'd put something together. All current orbinauts could have their name listed too. And a semi-interactive tour-screen (like they have in museums) could call up a bio, if the user has submitted one.

What else would be cool would be doom wads made playable when you dock at a base, uhm perhaps not..

lol now that takes me back..wow, good ol' doom. So what if the tribute thing was done then hidden somewhere in the solar system? In a random place and coded in such a way that not even the addon maker would know where it was. I keep picturing the "monolith" from 2001 Space Odyssey somewhere in the solar system with the names of Dr. Martin and other addon makers on it. And if you manage to land on it ,it will do some kind of crazy thing like a sound file,Orbiter credits, music,Orbiter history or something. And maybe a O-F nomination thing where everybody can try to get thier favorite addon maker listed on it (no fair voting for yourself )Something like that maybe? :hailprobe:
Maybe a Orbiter community scavenger hunt! Winner gets a T-shirt or somthing.

I too have thought of a scavenger hunt for OMP. I too have been inspired by the monollith. Something that can be scaled in size in the tribute.cfg file.

I often dock at station on phobos then load doom. When done, leave phobos and go to deimos and do the same thing. Sometimes you need to use 2 or 3 programs to get your jollies on!

Enterprise 1701 Bridge crew wouldn't trip on animated lips:

Chekov: "It's speaking in Russian"

Uhuru: "Swahili!"

Spock: "Vulcan. Apparently Captain the anomaly has the ability to
communicate in native languages. Fascinating."

Kirk: "Sulu, bring us about. I want to take a closer look at this object."

Scotty: "Ion propulsion! Aye, this little beasty could teach us a thing or
two."

wait, wait, wait...wait.....what?

This thread fails on so many levels!
C'mon!!! A Bust of the "Creator" of Orbiter!?
It's like asking: "Hey Martin, when will you die?"
I don't know about the rest of you, but here... in Sparta, we make legends of the living and myths of the dead. (the later get a statue, or something)... the rest of them, DON'T!

The very reason, that one is still alive and well and has so much more to "give", to us, is the same, that forces to "not believe in icons".

:)

In my opinion we have to tribute Martin in a different way.

Adverise Orbiter as excellent physics educational tool (provide a link).

- on your webpage, as sig on other forums etc
- while speaking with physics teachers
- keep link in your IM status, Facebook, MySpace and mass social portals.

But as usuall that's my own opinion.

That wasn't my intention at all.

I'm a little Choktaw and Sioux. My ancestors and relatives still living today "believe" that a photograph captures the soul or "living essence" of a being. I don't.

http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/bust
mentions nothing about referencing the dead.

1. A sculptural portrayal of a person's head and shoulders
2. The breasts and upper thorax of a woman.

The second definition doesn't apply here.
If your offended in any way you have my sincerest apologies.

P.S. Three notes that formed a chord:

The "Zombie-Head" note was dissonant. But it's easy to see how the techniques used to create the Zombie Head could create something beautiful, bringing it into consonance.

It struck a chord in me I wanted to sound here at the forum. I predict Orbiter will go the distance. Just as many of the musicians we love from the past and present will be loved in the future. Perhaps the reason we only see busts of people who have joined with the force is that we only truly appreciate them when they're gone.
