General Question Delta Glider Texturing Questions.

Not sure if this is the correct subforum to ask this, but here goes.

Two questions, actually..

First off, are the Templates for the XR1 available here http://www.alteaaerospace.com/index-3.html suitable for the stock Delta Glider?

Second, what resolution is considered standard, if I produce anything good enough to share?

I don't believe the XR-1 paint kit is compatible with the stock DG.
As for standard... it'll be fine as long as you've put effort into it, nobody is going to discourage you. :cheers:

DeltaGlider's "standard" resolution stock skins (Textures/DG/Skins) use 512x512 px textures. The "high" resolution stock skins (Textures2/DG/Skins) use 1024x1024 px textures.

Yes it is, actually. The DG-S, anyway. For the SCRAM-less DG you'd have to take the SCRAM engines off the texture.

So, when I select high res in my vessel configurations for the DG (for example) it looks for textures in the textures 2 folder then.

I'm noticing that the base textures for the XR series are all at 1024x1024 in the textures folder anyway, and all the DG IV skins live in the textures 2 folder.

So, for most of the common ships 1024x1024 can be considered the current standard? or would I be better including 2 versions of a DG skin at both resolutions?

(also after poking about, I can't find a separate DG-S skin in orbiter, so it looks like the XR1 template will work for both stock Deltagliders :)
 
Most modern computers can handle a 1024x1024 texture just fine; I doubt anyone would complain if you didn't include a lower-res version.

Also, the DG-S bottom hull texture is in:
Orbiter2010\Textures2\DG\dgmk4_2.dds

The standard bottom hull texture is in:
Orbiter2010\Textures2\DG\dgmk4_2_ns.dds

And the top hull texture is common to both:
Orbiter2010\Textures2\DG\dgmk4_1.dds

Looks like a wee bit of fiddling in the hull bottom lines area is all that will be needed to do the basic DG.

But making 512x512 textures from 1024x1024 is 10 seconds work for a texture creator, so you can include them anyway.

Enlarging a small texture does not make it high res, the process adds pixels to the image and causes blurry pixelation and loss of fidelity.

On the other hand, reducing a large 2mp image to 1mp preserves most of the quality.

Further reducing a 2mp image to .5mp can reduce fidelity and return you to a blurry image.

The quantity of pixels in an image determines how sharp or fuzzy an image can be when resizing.

My rule of thumb is to reduce by 50% only once, or to enlarge by 33% only once, to maintain a compromise in image quality. The larger you start from, the higher the resolution will be for the original, but as you reduce the image, you lose quality, and at a certain point, fidelity of what you are trying to accomplish.

Other opinions may vary.

I agree one reduction is OK and timeless

I was imparting my considerable experience resizing.
