It's on top of a mountain, pretty much no threat from creepers. The commune isn't much more than a travel hub and storage depot these days, anyway.

What do you mean, it adjusts? And are you sure the server crashed, or was it just a network thing?

I guess I missed the last server failure. It went back up almost immediately after that earlier crash. And my personal feeling is that more frequent backups aren't necessary (but also not hurtful!)

Sorry to everyone who lost work. If you've lost valuable resources I can reimburse them (within limits).
The girlfriend (who recently moved in) set off the water detector in the kitchen and had no idea what it was, so she ended up calling the apartment office, and the maintenance guy also had no idea what it was, so he tried flipping the circuit breakers to see if it was something electrical, which naturally shut off the server. For what it's worth, she says she's so sorry
I will be adding rolling intraday backups of about 30minutes or so in addition to the daily permanent backup that's currently there. In addition, I'm strongly considering getting a UPS so it's not a problem at all.
It's kind of lame how easily minecraft can corrupt its world files...

Mushroom biomes don't exist yet, that's a 1.9 feature. As for snow biomes, we haven't found any that I know of, but they're around somewhere I'm sure.
