The first match of an 8 month Australia vs England sporting contest is about to start.

We have the Rugby Union first up followed by The Ashes (Cricket) in England followed by The Ashes in Australia.

Obviously the overall winner will be the one that wins at least 2 of the 3.

And first blood to Britain 21-23.

Are those Ashes both cricket? Didn't know they did back to back Ashes in the same year in the two hemispheres.

Both cricket yes. With the World Cup in Aus in 2014/15 they had to either push them back or bring them forward.

No contest shurely?

You're probably right. Though I am reminded a bit of 1989, when Australia lost the one day series that preceded the Ashes (in England) and were coming off a domestic series loss to the West Indies and even worse performances before that. And yet Australia won that series 4-0 and ushered in the long era of Australian dominance.

This time round, however, Australia has far deeper organisational problems. I have some thoughts about this which would probably send the thread to the basement ... The team is really not very likable IMO.

I'll be ignoring the first couple of tests to watch the TDF, though it looks like another English (via Kenya/South Africa) victory there too!

Aussie Cricket coach has been sacked.... Time for Ponting?

Great news and long overdue. Lehmann will probably (hopefully) get the job which means Khawaja will finally get back to the crease, which means a far stronger squad IMO (read between the lines here and you'll understand my basement-worthy hunches).

Not sure if this will get outside the UK:

A promo for a forthcoming BBC drama. Wether it may be a coincidence for the up coming
sports drama, welll....

Actually, that is Australian :P

It is quite good. Although working out which actor is playing Packer is getting confusing. (Every Packer drama is having someone else play him)

I enjoyed that series. The first part is an interesting insight into how reluctant the ACB were to modernise, and some of the player politics. The second part I felt was less interesting, a panegyric to Packer, which is unsurprising given the show was made for his network!

I have the old 'bodyline' series from the 1980s here, I might try to watch that before the Ashes start ... just noticed the whole series is on Vimeo:

The production is slow paced and dated, but the series will appeal to cricket fans.

Australia have won in Melbourne by a point! Series is now 1 all with Sydney to play. But first cricket and Nine are showing it prime time.

Don't know. The Rugby League world cup might offer some insight into that...

But if Clark and Warner remain in form and our bowling remains decent...

The ASHES (cricket)

What can I say, the ashes will be Australian, looks like the poms dont want them bad enough, so us aussies will be happy to take them of your hands. I dont think it was much of a contest really. At one stage there Austalia couldn,t win SEX in a Brothel with a roll of 50 dollar bills in our hands.
go the AUSSIES
