I am working on a total remake of the Shuttle Fleet textures. The idea is to bring the Shuttle to a higher level then the current shuttles available in Orbiter (stock Atlantis, SF and SSU) and in order to do so I had to re-create the textures from scratch using as main source hi res pictures of the real Shuttle.
It is still work in progress, so far only the fusolage and the OMS pods have been edited and fine tuning is needed. If I will be happy with the final result my intention would be to upload them in OH but I don't know if prior permission from the developer is required. I think it would be kind anyway to ask David413 before but he left the forum quite a long ago and I don't know how to get in touch with him.

Here are some screenshots of the WIP

It looks like there are some problems with the links you posted.

...Before embarking on such a big project, I would ask the original authors for permission first. You never know...

I can't view any of your pics.

The textures were done mainly by myself and Michael Grosberg. I don't have a problem with upgrading them for the fleet or Stock atlantis, but I would prefer having approval by the SSU team, to release those.

I am not sure if those make sense in the standard package, they appear pretty hardware consuming. I think it would be better releasing those as add-on of their own.

That would be fine too.

Yes. It would not be the first time alternate textures have been released: [ame="http://www.orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=5913"]Shuttle fleet textures hi-res burned[/ame]

These are just some of the many alternate shuttle textures available on Orbit Hangar. And your textures look great! What is the resolution?

What we could also easily include in SSU would be special configuration options for allowing alternative texture sets - if we for example paint on dynamic textures.

Already implemented in the mission file: OrbiterTexture=Challenger_3rdmod
Texture must reside in Textures\SSU\.

Yes, but we don't paint on the textures, which makes it easy right now.

What do you mean "paint on textures"? If you want to use a texture called "Challenger_alt.dds" then you just specify that. The texture names aren't hard-coded. It will load the texture you tell it to.

Using dynamic textures and changing them, like drawing names on them, or copy labels in them, like we for example do with too many panels in the VC.

We did this for the right wing and FWD fuselage name, but since that limited us to just Discovery, Atlantis and Endeavour current appearance we got rid of it and implemented the way we do it now.

David413 can easily be contacted through Dansteph's forum, head over there and drop him a line.

I also cant seem to see any of your pics, but the idea of a higher resolution Shuttle texture is something I would love to see! Hope it goes well.

Cheers!

Are those in-game screen shots ?

I have tried pretty much all those textures, but they all looked to me a little too blurry (except the D3D9 ones).
What I am trying to do is having some nice hi-res textures that enable the user to appreciate even the smallest details like for example the different TPS Tiles and blankets, the RCS thrusters and the Shuttle logos and markings. This should give the Shuttle a more realistic look

Could you re-link the OMS_pod.jpg and Vertical_stabilizer.jpg images? They only lead to "Invalid attachment" error messages.

Looks nice. Although there should not be any water proofing injection ports on the OMS pod tiles. Here's a nice close-up from STS-116. And the orbiter name is located too high up. It's supposed to be located level with the payload bay door hinges.
