Plane crashes at Austrian airshow, pilot killed

30 Aug, 2015

A pilot has been killed after losing control of a small plane in Austria, the latest in a string of fatal incidents that have plagued airshows this summer.

The 50-year-old pilot was attempting to complete a loop in front of an audience of 500 people at the Friesach-Hirt air show in Carinthia in Austria when he crashed, according police spokesman Markus Dexl, who spoke with the Austria Press Agency. The pilot died from his injuries before he could be taken to the hospital.

No one else was hurt in the incident, but the remainder of the flying festival was abandoned.

Is there something wrong in the air this year? Excessive gravity? :(

I think it's more of a lack of altitude.

I've been at the Friesach-Hirt airfield two years ago, on Thursday before the annual airshow started. The people were very friendly, really a familiar crowd. They allowed me to have a closer look at the planes which already had arrived.
It is a pitty this accident happened, for the pilot who bought the farm, but also for the guys organizing this event without public funding or military support.

How long before airshows are banned at this rate?

Or taped with no crowd, then shown on a big screen.
:(
