The Autonomous Transfer Vehicle Mark II (commonly known at the ATV or ATV MKII) is the third generation resupply vehicle that was used to transport supplies and equipment to the Skylab-Columbia Space Station (SCSS). The first generation of resupply ship was a modified Apollo capsule launched on a Saturn IB platform (ARMS). This was replaced with the ESAS type design of ATV which was capable of providing about 4 to 5 tons of cargo to include water and oxygen. ATV improves on this design by providing a cargo delivery platform of about 10 tons. This improved capability also provides not only for sundry items, equipment, water and oxygen, but the addition of fuel transport to the SCSS. The ATV is not capable of Earth reentry. It is designed to burn up in the Earth atmosphere. The ATV is powered by the MPSMS II model (Multiple Purpose Service Module Mark II). This service module is the same module that will be used in the next generation of manned space flight for SimNASA. The mark II version is only intended for low Earth orbit (LEO) flights. This version of the ATV was designed as a temporary spacelab or spacestation for use with the Orion II MK II spacecraft.
Included in this package is the ARESÂ IÂ launch vehicle used to launch both the ATV and the Orion II.
