Project 2001 Discovery One (book)

However, the mission was originally going to Jupiter and was diverted to Saturn. It could be that since there was no nessecity to land on Jupiter, the pods had no landing gear and Bowman planned to just hover over the monolith and not land. By this line of reasoning, I suggest that the pods be designed to go to Jupiter, (I don't know if they planned to land on one of Jupiter's moons) and not Saturn.

hmmm, that's true.

The idea of landing on Iapetus was made by Bowman, was not planned in advance. By the time he believed to be on the monolith able to land, which would be possible because, as I said earlier, the gravity of Iapetus is very weak.

I have worked first with the dragonfly configuration, but I changed after reading the book.

These designs are interesting, Graham2001. Could be made a add special.

Why the different design?

I think he's trying to match the design in the scan I posted, which was one of several designs considered for the film version of Discovery. '2001, Filming the future' shows about eight different designs, about the only thing that does not change is the crew sphere.

Even after the final model for the film was completed there were small changes, originally there were thin struts surrounding the cargo pods which were removed before filming started.

The whole preplanned landing thing has always bothered me a bit too. But consider this: the fact that Hal felt he could carry out the mission by himself, without the astronauts or scientists, implies that the Discovery's "true" mission was limited to orbital reconnaissance. The mission planners didn't know that there was a mile high monolith on the surface of Iapetus, only that a strong signal had been transmitted between the Tycho Anomaly and somewhere on the Saturnian moon. I imagine they felt they might have to dig for it as they did for the one on Luna, and Discovery's mission might simply have been to map magnetic anomalies in preparation for a lander mission.

Great project by the way! I'm looking forward to playing with this whatever the final pod design might be...

That could be. If so, perhaps Discovery II that was going to pick up the crew at Saturn was going to carry a lander and since Discovery I was not going to land at Jupiter, it did not carry any landers.

Discovery carried several expendable probes as well as the pods, and pf course, HAL could control the pods remotely, too.

I have almost done the design. I use the design of four tanks, by the time version 1.0 will only be the journey Earth-Moon-Jupiter-Saturn-Iapetus. Then I add pods, TMA-2 and atmospheric probe to Jupiter,

Although I'm having a little problem with the crew sphere. I confess that I not be very good with the design (I use Anim8or) a problem with the doors of the pods, I simply do not know how the doors.

It is disgraceful that long after the project but I will work things over the weekend, if not work, I ask for help. :sos:
