Having a joystick is good, but for a lot of time of a space mission, it's unneeded:

It would be great if a joystick could be plugged in and recognised while the sim is running, avoiding having to end the Orbiter process completely and restart.

I'm guessing that this would be a huge amount of work/computer resources for relatively very little gain, but as a concept... Possible?

:hello:

My question is why do you need to unplug the joystick in the first place? I agree with you that often in Orbiter, the joystick is not needed. I often find, since I prefer to get vehicles like the XR2 into space using launch vehicles, that the only time I use the joystick is the final moments of the flight, using it to land the vehicle on a runway. But in the other moments, I just have the stick and throttle set to the side. I see no need to unplug it.

Just my two cents worth. Maybe more like a nickle's worth.

You're quite right, unplugging is a bit pointless - I was more thinking about plugging in for those "final moments".

When I use a Joystick, I need to be careful in space because, even if you set it aside, it is very easy to bump it and ruin a smooth docking, or worse, hit the throttle sliders and de-orbit your expensive spaceplane accidentally. I liked using the DGIV because you could shut off the main engines using the control panel and then not have to worry about messing up your perfectly aligned orbit while reaching for your bag of Doritos.

it would be easy enough to add an "on/off" switch to something like my directinput module, i guess....

in my case, i would still need to add some sort of ingame UI thing for it (cfg only, so far) - then you could select and manipulate individual devices and whatnot....

or...... you COULD just simply hit ctrl+/(numpad) to switch the RCS jets off when not needed, you know

Yea, I find it a bit unnecessary. If you bump the joystick enough to change your orbit, you need to stop playing Wii so close to the computer. :P The only time I had the joystick get bumped was when a cat rubbed up on it and caused my Shuttle to spin at a blistering 0.5 degrees a second (which was then canceled out automatically by the shuttle DAP). But if someone feels the need for such things... by all means, knock your socks off.

I have definately bumped my joystick causing some RCS fire. Never created too much of a problem for me, aside the one time I did it when coasting to the runway in the XR2, lost a bit of energy there.

Bumping the throttle can be a bit of a problem I would imagine, but I would think that would be quite the hard thing to do with most joystick/throttle devices.
