In AMSO I managed to extract the LM with the CSM from the 3rd stage, get in lunar orbit, and undock the LM from the CSM. The LM is now helplessly orbiting. It does not react to general RCS inputs (the num keypad), only to "MFD buttoned" inputs (like "prograde", "horiz. level", "nom+"). The hoover engine control inputs ("0" and "." on the numpad) don't work either. The engine remains dead (with a full tank of fuel). And I also don't know how to extend the gear (tried pressing "G"). I'm in the LM alright, because when I press F8 I can see the interior. Can anybody help me out? Thx

Have you activated the systems? You have to do that first. I don't know exactly what the key is (and I don't have the manual in front of me) but I believe it's 'K' (of course with the LM selected).

EDIT:

It's the 'J' key when you are docked to the CSM. From the manual:

As long as you are docked with the CSM in the LM vessel, this key allows you to toggle LM activation.

While you are still docked, you need to press M to change over the LM and the press J to activate it. Once you to that, the lights come on, the gear extends and two astronaut figures appear in it. Once that is done you and undock - not before.

Pressing "M" only results in the combination CSM-LM rotating to "normal+"

Try the pre-prepared scenario 'Apollo11 Step 12' as a test. Press 'M', then 'J' to activate the LM. Works perfectly.

Do you use a keyboard without numeric keys on the right side of it? If so, be sure to disable NumLock.

But still, you don't need to press "M" to change focus; the regular F3 will do the trick for you.

So just be sure to be focused on the LM while docked to the CSM and press J to activate. Also disable NumLock. Just open a notepad and check if the J button returns a J to check if it works.

solved

Problem solved, to lower gear had to press k key immediately after extracting the LM. The LM thereafter becomes responsive to RCS inputs once it is detached from CSM

No. You should be able to activate the LM at any time as described above - it does not need to be (and should not be - historically) immediately after extraction.
