I think I mentioned this a while ago in a thread about projects, but here's a more detailed blog entry on it.

It is the year 2214 (although it's 2001 in-sim, because it's more stable that way and it really doesn't matter since this is doesn't take place in the Sol system anyway), and the human expedition to Upsilon Andromedae is finally approaching its target. The crew has been defrosted and is now warming up the unused parts of the ship that have been sleeping for more than half a century. They are wondering what has happened in the solar system since their departure, but will likely never know, as any communications would take 44 years to arrive, and 88 total for a response, unless Earth has discovered FTL technology in their absence.

They are truly, completely and irrevocably on their own, more so than anyone else in history.

The reason for their presence 416 trillion kilometers from their home is simple: They are to, using the enormous amount of resources at their disposal, start a new civilisation around Upsilon Andromedae. Decades ago, an unmanned probe passed through the system, and discovered what had been deemed with 95% certainty to be a habitable world in orbit around the third planet in the system.

The crew is 150 strong, 75 men and 75 women of all races, carefully chosen from the best volunteers from many fields (astrophysicists, biologists, doctors, architects, engineers, etc.) They have 4 vessels at their disposal, currently linked for maximum living space. The two primary vessels are Foundry and Andromeda, and there are two smaller vessels Icarus and Daedalus which will be used for interplanetary travel. There are multiple mass cargo landers, SSTO crew vehicles, atmospheric craft, probes, space station modules, landable factories, miners. It is an entire city disassembled.

Of course, Orbiter can't handle all this stuff, so currently I have 2 Longshots and 2 JamesCooks 1000AU from Upsilon Andromedae, all docked to a small SSBB complex. It looks fracking cool, too (although it's a framerate killer for my little Inspiron.)

Preliminary screenshot of the vessel, at a wondrous 5 FPS:

Cool! I had wondered about some kind of forum thing not centered on Sol, so this might come as a refreshing...thing.
BTW, is this meant to be a joint forum thing like OFMM, or what? You didn't really make that clear. Anyway, it was a cool story, bro.

Nah, this is just me. It's going to be one of those continuous reality scenarios.

Oh. Do write back! :hello:
Or...maybe you'll write a book...?

Either way, it will take 44 years to get back... :P

Well, 150 characters building a civilisation in a foreign solar system...it's like Red Mars on a whole new level! :)

Seriously though, I won't even try it. I've got enough going on already. :coffee:
