Gaming Any IL-2 Sturmovik fans?

You're kidding! They're still releasing patches?
Most developers update for about 2 years (mostly bug fixes), but these guys seems like they really care.

I want to hug the devs right now :3

there's an ALL IN ONE pack!!? :woohoo:

between this, my recent acquisition of DCS Warthog, wife, dog and the G42-200.... :uhh: - clearly that whole "sleep" thing has gotta go

I think we should have thread titled "The Orbinaut's Essential Library". The first entry being orbiter,of course, followed by FSX and IL2 .

i think LOMAC can make an appearance on the list, nothing like some weapon avionics to make the whole "flying" thing a little more complex

I brought a IL2:1946 copy recently and i gotta say it blows many other sims away.
Previously i has testing the original IL2 demo. And even as a demo it is far better than F-22 Lighting 3, a game released 2 years before IL2 and i brought it 2 years ago.
Also how do i select to take-off from carriers at Quick Mission Builder?

I used to fly this sim from the beginning. My favorite thing was
to lead a schwarm of Bf109G-6's up to attack an unescorted combat
box of B-17F's from the early daylight raids say fall 1943. Seeing
that formation trailing contrails coming right at you was truly a
sight to behold! Best tactic was head on attack slightly off
center then snap roll inverted turning and diving away split s.
Very hard to get away undamaged. Time consuming to set up an
attack, then throw in escorting Mustangs and its game over man.
The other thing was flying Soviet I-16's vs Japanese A5M's during
Khalkin Gol incident. Now that made for some turning dogfights!

Mistels can be hard to set up. Also, it's a shame that the AI can't use them, I would love to dogfight a Mistel convoy trying to drop one on my airfield. :P

When a Mistel explodes, you don't want to be above it!

Have you ever tried a Mistel?

I assume you mean against a bomber formation? If so no. I always liked flying inferior planes against quality, more of a challenge. Flying Tigers P-40B's or F4F's vs Zeros or Finnish Brewster Buffalo's vs MiG's. Great sim indeed.

This is a Mistel (Ju-88):

Basically, it's a Focke Wulf and a Ju-88 attached to each other. With the Ju-88's cockpit removed and the nose is packed with explosives.

Yeah it was an air to ground setup, I thought he meant staying with it kamikaze style. Probably couldn't get up that high. I did try level bombing from above with 109's like I read in a book once.

Must be a very stupid book, since the 109s have no means to install a bomb sight.

I got red/cyan glasses today, installed the iz3d drivers, and it works great! Was cool to see my TB-3 being shot down by jets...

Heinz Knoke's book. It was a field mod using the centerline rack with no sights that the pilots and groundcrews came up with themselves. I suppose they figured that many bombers below bound to hit one then cause a midair reaction.

OK. I retract stupid. This is already so stupid that I run out of properly describing words.

I know he claimed to have downed one bomber with a bomb, but he would have killed three bombers with the fuel that he burned carrying this bomb over the North Sea. It is the most stupid known way to use a Bf 109. Even ramming attacks had more sense.

Desperate times. I'm guessing the squadrons were suffering such losses and low serviceability rates from damaged aircraft with not enough downings that they tried anything at first. I remember reading it didn't take long for the bomber crews to figure out what they were doing up there and start weaving the formation throwing off their planning.

Desperate times...yes, but no excuse for such stupidities. Even using air to ground rockets for that task would have been smarter.

(PS: This was 1943, one of the first big daytime raids. Not 1945, when good pilots had been rarer than good aircraft. It was really huge idiocy by Knoke, who also ordered the rest of his wing to carry bombs and waste fuel for them)
