I had Piano lessons for about 5 summers, and a couple years of Trombone in High School. Didn't play at all for three years (Military), and then started teaching myself Guitar - they are a lot easier to carry around than a Piano!
Played in a few "basement bands", Punk and Metal, but got tired of the way everyone else just wanted to play covers and didn't have the balls to play original material.
Eventually I sent acoustic and sort of adopted a "modern American Folk" style, primarily because you can't really pull off Rock or Punk by yourself. I played almost exclusively original material (only played three covers at shows - Arlo Guthrie's " Coming into Los Angelese", BTO's, "Down, Down", and "I don't like Mondays" from the Boomtown Rats. Off stage, I've played other people's stuff, of course. In fact I learned guitar by learning "Stairway to Heaven" from sheet music.
About 6 years ago, I moved to be closer to my parents and there's no real music scene around here. I still play some, and record (just for my own amusement) doing the Guitars and piano live, program the drums, and do the bass on a keyboard. It's so much easier than the old "Drum Machine and a 4 track" was! I use Hydrogen for drums, Rosegarden for MIDI, and Ardour for recording. I use Stompboxes for effects, and my soundcard (Creative Audigy Platinum) provides cabinet simulation. I used to use Cubase and Guitar Tracks, but found that I could get better results faster using Linux - J.A.C.K. is fantastic and Windows just can't provide the same level of extremely low latency that a properly set up Linux system can with a properly patched kernel.
