I've recently gotten back into DF, and I've been interested in trying a bloodline fort. Are there any DF players here on O-F who might want to start one with me?

(For those who don't know, Dwarf Fortress is an AMAZING procedurally generated ASCII game where you run a construct and control a fortress of dwarves. A bloodline game is one where the fortress save file is played by a series of different members that pass on the save after a predetermined amount of time, usually an in-game year.)

EDIT: We're currently determining the basics of the fort. Here's the list so far:

Code:
-No exploits/cheating
-No aquifer
-Water source
-Huntable animals
-Flux stone
-Embark with anvil
-Embark near river

I've just come off of a DF stint back to orbiter (I seem to switch between playing either one obsessively for a while and then swapping to the other) but I just wanted to say how awesome DF is.

It is one of the best games I've played, even compared to ones I've spent a lot of money on.

Willed yes, but not now. I currently wait for the next release to come out soon, and then would like to have some time getting used to the next release, since the known changes in the game mechanics are already insane...

Yeah, the development list makes me drool when I look at it, though I'm pretty content with 40d16 for the time being considering all I'm really doing is trying to hone my endurance skills (right now, I get to about 70 dwarves at most before something goes catastrophically wrong and kills of the population). Has Toady given a possible release date?

I'll commit to some bloodline action. Vanilla? or shall we use a mod?

Probably not for a month or two. He's debugging the next release now.
Also, losing is fun!

Stonesense is pretty cool, my favorite visualizer (though this is partially cause I can never get Visual Fortress to work, and 3dwarf is kinda lame).

As far the mods go, I've never played with mods. However, Dig Deeper seems to make things a lot more interesting, so maybe we could try that? Depends on how nooby we are as a group. Perhaps vanilla might be challenging enough as is.

If we pick a dangerous enough location with 'extra fun' (use site finder) Vanilla should be sufficient.

Use DD if you wish, fyi we need to bring an anvil and defenses need to be up before the fall of the first year.

We need to figure out themes and restrictions. AKA should we build/not build a walled keep? Or more of a Moria entrance?
Also Boozecooking, we probably shouldn't use that exploit.

I'll play with whatever restrictions/unrestricted people want, I'm just suggesting to get this moving along. (Obviously we shouldn't cheat with reveal or tweak or anything)

I agree, DD probably isn't necessary. Definitely bring an anvil, defenses are important if we embark in a really fun location.

Not sure about themes, though I'd like to enforce a necessary screenshots + writeup rule to make it more interesting for anybody reading it.

As far as exploits go, I go as far as using mass dumping to put excess stone in one spot for cleaning (sorta an exploit) before I consider it cheating. Are you opposed to that?

I have now fours games exceeding 200 dwarfs. All is just a matter of designing the right anti-goblin defenses. The current game is playing in evil biomes, and already exceeds the 100 dwarf limit.

Has Toady given a possible release date?

No, just had a few new delays with the next release.

Yeah, I still consider myself a pretty big noob. I can get a decent fortress up and running, but it doesn't take very long for it start failing miserably. My most successful fortress to date failed about 80 dwarves in during a siege when I tried to install a drawbridge in the front hall that would keep my barracks outside but the rest of the fort safe inside. I dug the channels right before the siege hit, and most of my miners/planters/etc were trapped outside and murdered. The few soldiers in the barracks during the attacks were overpowered, and I tried to build a bridge to connect my remaining soldiers to the attack. Unforunately, the goblins swamped in and murdered my entire fort before the soldiers could regroup. :C

There is a special command to command all dwarfs underground, which should be your best friend. Next, I don't use channels, since they steal precious soil for farming. Usually I first create a small tower as entrance and have the entrance at the second Z level. The same principle also works for ramps, so you can let caravans underground without goblin contamination.

I like to build a large motte and bailey. The outer walls keep everyone outside and provide surface area for woodcutting/herbalism/farming during sieges. The inner tower is has a sunny courtyard with a well, more fighting positions and of course the entrance to the mine.

 My current fortress looks roughly the same, but not very large...also I prefer doing some non-optimal design stuff for "looking good"... wait, I'll grab a screenshot...

I'll also do a visual fortress rendering, if this works.

Better, now rendered with Visual Fortress:

From the southern Guard Tower (for protecting my dwarfs from Skeletal wolves):

Well Shadow Addict, this is a dorfmocracy so make some decisions and get the bloodline started. I'm sure more people will jump in once they see how much fun we're having.

Yeah, I use that command often, but it's problematic cause they always run outside before they realize it's bright and run back inside, during which time then can be killed. I usually channel out a little skylight above part of my opening hall so they'll encounter that before they get all the way outside. I also usually don't have that much of a soil concern.

Looks great! I don't build above-ground constructions very often (ONE time I built a tower!), but I'm thinking I should probably get into it a bit more.

Yeah, let's talk about that. What kind of biome do we want to embark on? I'd kinda like something well-forested, but if others want a challenging lack of wood, I'm open to that.

I already get most wood I need from Elves and trading...
