I know this sounds like a very not-searched for question... :embarrassed:

Is there a step-by-step (ie. dummies' guide) for how to take a mesh and texture it? I've noticed a few people wondering this.

I get making a mesh. How do you make the net-like .dds file to fit it?

I meant that the .dds files look like those paper "nets" that you cut out then fold into shape.

I've heared of UV maps but I've no idea what they do.
Yes, use a UV mapper and it will make the paper net texture you are looking for.

Wings3D has a decent UV mapper built in that's fairly easy to understand for new users.

Dan Steph has a good tutorial here:

On second look its more a hints and info page, but good stuff.
Links to You Tube tutorial if you are using 3DS Max.

Worth looking in the UCGO addon files to see how Dan Steph did his vehicles.

UV maps are a way to "position" the texture on the mesh. Each different modeling app handles UV maps a bit differently, you'll have to check the docs or forums for the tool you are using.

Not all modeling tools are fully "Orbiter Compatible", meaning that the conversion to .mesh format (for Orbiter) doesn't always convert the UV map correctly. Some do - check the tutorials section - there are several good tutorials for add-on devs.

Texturing is probably the hardest part of modeling for most people - if you run into trouble you may consider a partnership with one of the several skilled "skinners" that create all those cool XR-2 and DGIV skins.
