Question Best Film Ever?

As a war film fan I'd second 'saving private Ryan'. But also 'a bridge too far' is a personal favourite.

And for a different spin, 'a beautiful mind' is underrated IMO.

Forest Gump - it makes me all warm and fuzzy inside

My faverate War film is The Battle of the River Plate because it is a relatively good portrayal of an event, which is impressive for 1956.

I agree that most of the movies mentioned are great films.

But in my humble opinion Star Wars and Matrix are the best so far.

I think Blade Runner is visually one of the best ever without digital effects. A very subtle scenario as well. Tears in Rain is so heartbreaking:

It took me more than 20 years to understand the meaning of the end scene  :

I'm no film expert, and wouldn't dare name the greatest film ever. I couldn't even name a personal favourite. Too many films... But I'll say The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly is a movie I could watch over and over. Alien was genius. Star Wars was excellent. More or less any Pixar film is worth watching. End of Evangelion continues to be deeply and personally distrubing...

All this is pretty much academic since, having slept on it, I have decided that the best film ever is "Life of Brian".

Just like Blixel, it's "The Man from Earth" for me, it's a tour de force of how a very good plot can keep you captivated even with a somewhat mediocre videography and no SFX at all, just a bunch of people talking and trying to resolve the MC's story.

Thats easy for you to say, what about all us audience, what did MGM do for us, when I was a lad...continues for several centuries:)

Alien for me... still have the psychological scarring from seeing it as a child :shifty:

Nobody mentioned this yet, so I'll give it a go. There was a surprising entry which discouraged me from posting my personal favorite movie.
I enjoy the themes in this movie very much and its presentation is modest. Sam Bell's actions are very memorable and his feelings are relatable. There were even implications I missed during the first time I watched the movie.

I can only agree, really a great science fiction movie... one in which the technology plays only minor roles, which is quite rare in the genre.

(Also one of the few BluRays I own, that my girlfriend likes to watch - it must be very good.)

I guess this is difficult. It would have been better to have had them in different categories.
One of my favorites is Spinal Tap. But then I have other favorites in other categories.

Which leads to another great movie here... which had been parodied celebrated precisely in one acclaimed episode of my favorite TV series:

Now: Guess, which famous movie gets its tribute there?

2001: A Space Odyssey is my personnal favourite, closely followed by Joyeux Noël (Merry Christmas). In my opinion, it's the best war movie. It relates the ceasefires on Christmas Eve during the First World War.
