Hi all,

Still trying to rebuild my Orbiter installation and I'm getting that weird atmospheric thing where the horizon is okay, but overhead is black (and the stars are visible) after the scenario loads. Takes about 30 seconds to go from normal at loading to the weird effect.

I know this issue has come up before (and NukeET was kind enough to direct me to the old forum page with the suggested solutions).

The problem is that the msvcp71 & msvcr71 dlls are already installed, and I'm using the most current drivers for the Nvidia 8500 graphics card (downloaded this afternoon).

No change.

Running WindowsXP Professional/Nvidia GeForce 8500 graphic card

Orbiter video settings are: 32 bit color/Always Enumerate Devices/Direct3D T&L HAL/1440 X 900 resolution

Any suggestions or fixes?

Umm...no.

That's the same page that Nuke directed me to, and as I already posted, those dlls ARE installed (as well as the latest drivers for my video card).

As I stated in my previous post, I've tried to eliminate the obvious before I posted this question.

Thanks anyway...

Any other suggestions anyone?

Do you have those DLLs in your orbiter directory?
If you have, try adding msvcp81 and msvcr81. Even if that does not fix your problem it will save you from getting them later :p
Good Luck

had same problem and indeed installing the missing dll files mentioned above solved this annoying problem.

Thanks for the replies guys!

I finally thought "let me go back and do another installation & I'll check each item as I add it." Much to my surprise, the level 10 Earth textures were the cause.

I can't understand it because the new PC literally has 300% more processing power than the old one and runs blindingly fast & smooth, but the old one never hiccupped on stuff like this. Ah well, at least it's sorted out now.

Thanks for the help!

Which level 10 textures? The official ones or the much better (and bigger) ones from the landsat project?

Got this set from Orbithangar, but now that you mention it, I used the landsat ones on the old PC.

Another possible cause for this bug is having a planet that uses an ephemeris module, but the module is missing. This happened to me yesterday when I disabled the Spice module addon in JSGME, but Pluto still specified it in Pluto.cfg. Strangely, this made Earth's sky black in the daytime. Re-enabling the Spice module fixed it.
