The Bristol Spaceplanes Ascender was an X-Prize contender, and remains a possible future suborbital space tourism vehicle.
Approximately the size of a small business jet, the Ascender has twin turbofans for takeoff, and a single RL-10 engine to loft it into suborbital space.

Pros: Good sub-orbital spaceplane overall
Cons: A bit underpowered
Review:
This spaceplane is simple and fun to fly. It's a rush when you hit the rockets at 8 km and shoot up into suborbital space, but the jet engines are a bit underpowered. However, this can actually be a good thing when maintaining a subsonic glide to the runway.

Great addon, very smooth and fun to fly, but I'm just curious as to how to ignite the rocket engine? I'm still a bit new to orbiter, but I can't seem to get it to fire.

Not really an update, except that it now works in Orbiter 2010 (and NOT in 2006); the previous version was vice-versa.

The rocket engine is intentionally a separate throttle from the main (jet) engine throttle. So, to ignite the rocket, hit the hover thrusters ("0", zero, on the numpad). A little counter-intuitive perhaps, but the easiest to manage.

Thanks very much. I'd love to see a fully realized version with a VC and all, but that might be a bit too much to ask for  Are you still working on it?

Well, if I ever put together some VC code I like and can work with easily, there would be a lot of things that would get VC's. But the Ascender would be pretty low on the priority list.
