Question Choosing a Linux Distribution

I got a similar response at #Ubuntu Unity may be fine for netbooks or touchscreens, but IMHO it does not represent the traditional desktops or window managers like gnome, kde, xfce, blackbox, fluxbox, etc. If you look at how Canonical pretty much shoved pulseaudio down our throats you may see my concern. I spent a lot of time searching for a way to remove and use alsa instead.

I wasn't with Ubuntu yet when the switch to Pulse was made, and I've not personally found it too bad.

If I'll be able to easily switch from Unity to another desktop at the login prompt than my point is moot and I'll continue to use ubuntu because it is so user friendly.

Unless they *really* screw up the login screen it should be possible to set another desktop as your default fairly easily (once you've installed it).

if you want a complete system try UBERSTUDENT it is a version of Ubuntu with most stuff working and complete, including video codecs. If you instead use ubuntu you must install the the restricted driver stuff (restricted because it is proprietary).

Also, if you have an nvidia graphics card get the driver from nvidia but installing it is tricky... you have to shut off the X-server... there are forums which detail how to do this. without installing the nvidia card driver you will only have VGA graphics.

Lastly get the HP printer drivers from HP; they have a linux support.

In general , when you have an problem/error use google and include the word 'linux' and/or 'ubunu' and the error message... unless your equipment is very new someone has seen the problem.
