I've been playing around with Orbiter little by littl;e for several years now and I'm wondering... The only Mods I have really messed with have been DG IV and The XR2 Ravenstar. I have some understanding for orbital mechanics, and I can target and dock with the ISS pretty well with the DG, and use the transX MFD to target and transfer to other bodies- What are some cool things to do in Orbiter? I was hoping for maybe.. Cargo missions using the UGCO mod, but I didn't see any- hauling supplies/materials around the solar system seems like a pretty cool thing to do. Anything that you personally find like a really interesting thing to do in Orbiter would be a great suggestion.

Welcome to the forum.

If you have UGCO, have you tried the scenarios that come with the Arrow freighter?

Station building is (or sadly, was [haven't been in Orbiter seriously for going on two years now]) my favorite thing to do. I built one, then got obsessed with writing my own launcher, and truss system, and then real life took over.

- Fly to Mars, or one of the outer planets.
This requires good skills with TransX. Save often! :)

- Try one of the more realistic addons available at Orbithangar.
Because of the limited dV budget even simple missions become tricky.

- Understand the syntax of the scenario files, write your own scenarios and publish them. So you can build your own missions, using available spacecrafts.

Yup, will do on the solar system exploration bit, maybe try to plan multiple planet flybys in one launch.

The more realistic addons don't really appeal to me because realistically space vehicles are controlled autonomously by programs. So More Sci-Fi suits me a bit more since it makes a little more sense for me to be able to plan out my own missions with ships, like the DG, have more- I guess leniency in their roles and Dv margins.

And learning mission making sounds scary.

Here are some of my favorite things to do in Orbiter:

- KSC to Olympus Base using XR2 without extra fuel

- KSC to ISS using

Using IMS to build working spacecraft

I've used the IMS 1.0 system with all it's prereqs along with the DirectX 9.0 drivers to produce some truly HUMONGOUS ships that actually work. Most of my ships are designed for outer planet work but I do have an idea for a ship that can work the inner solar system, at least to Venus. Some pictures of my Lunar Station and Solar System Transport Vehicle (SSTV) 1.0.

Zoomed in on the ISS so you can see how small the ISS is compared to the SSTV-001

Dantassii That thing is absolutely massive.
And Anroalh- I suppose I could... with an Alcubierre Drive or enough fuel and time on my hands.

Thanks Dasm. I mean I don't sign my posts with HUMONGOUS IMS shipbuilder for nothing. :)

:hmm:

AFAIK there isn't a gardening mod available for Orbiter yet, so I can't think of anything that wouldn't be cool to do in this sim.

The important thing is to do things you enjoy.(Even if it can be frustrating trying things you don't fully understand. Been there, done that) Even when I fail it's usually as cool as it gets on a computer.

Currently [ame="http://www.orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=6167"]this is about as close as you're going to get[/ame].

Im not good at the game, but i think role-playing a bit is pretty fun.

Some years ago I planned an earth earth venus earth trajectory in order to reach jupiter with a probe integrated with a lander for Europa. (Galileo II). After that, i planned some Ganymede and Europa slingshot for the lander to Save propellant for Europa Orbit Inserction.. 6 year mission

Install some of the wilder bases and go visit somewhere new. For example: download Myron Base (which is on Mercury) from OrbitHangar.com and set up a mission to there, using TransX or IMFD.

Try out unpowered landings (Shuttle style) back onto Earth (e.g. to somewhere cool like Wideawake International). For extra skill ... do an unpowered landing in to a base on Mars, with very little atmosphere to help your turns and braking!

The OFSS missions are cool too. Search the Forum here for OFSS, set up a new Orbiter folder with all the pre-requisites, and go fly some of those missions. They will take you through flights with equipment you have never seen before (e.g. the Soviet fleet), as well as things you will be more familiar with.

I wanted to say try one of the Apollo mods, but I cant remember which one was the complex one. AMSO was the easy one, I think. Also, the Space Odyssey ship and missions were cool. Wasn't there an interstellar travel mod for Orbiter? Or at least some rewritten stellar system where you basically had a few stars or brown dwarfs at humongous distances to each other

You mean NASSP?

That's the one. AMSO was nice, NASSP was ludicrously complex when I tried it back in 2009 (I think), but it did have that "true" air to it.

edit: At least on my to-do list is trying old scrapped missions. Like soyuz lunar flyby, Apollo to Venus and so on. Maybe some other people would enjoy that too
