News Crash landing of Tu154 - 7 of september 2010

I know. But probably, they could use it instead of the turn-and-bank indicator? At least, I think, that would tell them, if they were doing a standard turn, or side-slipping.
It could serve the same purpose as the "ball" in the turn coordinator, yes.

Yes, water in glass on a plane is a side-slip indicator. If the water stays in place, and level, you are not slipping in your turn. And not loosing any precious lift that you would need if you had no engine power.
According to the news story, they still had engine power.

Also, reportedly, since the plane had experienced an electric malfunction, many gauges in the cockpit tripped out; to replace the missing artificial horizon, the crew asked an attendant to pour some water into a glass and put this new "gauge" atop the control panel. Combining that with the front view allowed them to perform their approach and landing.

Now that's just hardcore. Seriously.

So they've decided to do it. They're chopping forest right now to deliver airplane to airstrip end and to lengthen the airstrip itself, though I don't know for how long. And they will replace engines.

And it makes me think: what for? Does it really worth it to get old malfunctioning airplane out of a bog considering such expences? And let's not forget about risk!

Why not, maybe it is cheaper than buying a modern airliner as replacement ;)

I want to see faces of its future passengers considering they'll know its flight history.

Oh come on, hijacking and crash landing aren't the same thing! After all, they took off from Aden even without repair.

Interesting story, by the way.

Interesting story, by the way.

There is actually a very good German movie about the incident, after all, the incident was the first mission of the now famous GSG 9.

But there are also "geographies" of planes that had a minor crash and returned to service, often in the same carrier, though it is really more common to sell them afterwards.

Executive order awarding state decorations to the crew of a Tu-154 plane for courage and heroism

Tags: state decorations

Dmitry Medvedev signed Executive Order On Awarding State Decorations to the Crew of a Tu-154 Aircraft of Mirny Aviation Division of AO ALROSA, Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).

Pilots Andrei Lamanov and Yevgeny Novoselov were awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation for their courage and heroism in an emergency situation. The other seven crew members were awarded the Order of Courage.

The passenger Tu-154 aircraft with 72 passengers and nine crew members on board was flying from Yakutia to Moscow on September 7, 2010 when its electricity supply, navigation equipment and radio communications failed at an altitude of more than 10 kilometres and so it was forced to make an emergency landing at a military airfield in Izhma, Komi Republic (Northwestern Federal District), not designed to handle large aircraft and in recent years used to serve helicopters only. No one was injured during the landing and the plane received only slight damage.

Now, I'm happy to share the REALLY spirit empowering news!

After some patching done at the site and waiting while the ground freezes enough to support the weight, it's back to active plane's life!

Tu-154 back in the air six months after miracle landing in taiga

Published: 24 March, 2011, 16:31

The airplane that became famous after an emergency crash landing in Russia's Komi Republic in September of last year is back in the air. But Russia's aviation agency wants the model either upgraded, or out of the skies for good by July 2011.

The Alrosa Airlines Tu-154M took off again this week from the Izhma Airport, where it has sat since its September emergency landing. The flight took the plane to the city of Ukhta, also in the Komi Republic. After undergoing maintenance in Ukhta, it will continue on to the southern city of Samara for rehabilitation at a local aircraft factory.

Izhma Airport's runway had only been used by helicopters in recent years until malfunctioning equipment on the Alrosa Airlines plane forced pilots to land wherever they could manage. Luckily, all 72 passengers and 9 crew members on board landed without injury.

Russia's federal aviation body, Rosaviation, determined a failing power supply caused the Alrosa Airlines Tu-154M to malfunction mid-flight.

But it was not the not the first time this particular model has faced operating problems.

Malfunctions caused other Tu-154Ms to crash in Iran in 2009, and at Moscow's Domodedovo Airport in December 2010.

Given the list of incidents the Tu-154M has been involved in, Rosaviation is pushing airlines who use the planes to either upgrade them by July of this year, or retire them from the fleet.

According to agency head Aleksandr Neradko, neglect for routine structural modifications has put Tu-154Ms into an increasing number of dangerous situations over the last two years.

Next, RT report on the event:

And unnarrated footage of the same, with clearer views:

The elder man who managed to lift the bird off once again was distinguished Test Pilot Ruben Yesayan. Hiw words:

"From here to Ukhta we'll proceed at altitude 3600 with lowered landing gear, at indicator speed 420 km/h. 25 minutes after taking off, we'll land in Ukhta."

"As a head of test centre, what can you say about this airplane's worthiness to work on commercial routes and carry people?"

"I think after repairs at the plant, it will be ready to carry people again".

The problem was taking off from the runway only 1300 metres long, while the nominal runway length for a Tu-154M is 2200 m. Yesayan managed to lift off after 800 m run (saying to be fair, with just 11 tonnes of kerosene in tanks and no passengers).

That's fantastic!
