Everything that could have went wrong did go wrong at Las Vegas today at the final race of this years Indycar Series season. A fifteen car disaster resulted in the loss of life of two time Indy 500 winner, and 2005 Indycar Series champion, Dan Wheldon.

I watched the whole thing unwind on live TV. I've been crying ever since. He leaves behind his wife and two sons, at ages 2 and seven months.

Saw the whole thing live... First race I was sitting down to watch of the whole season, and it had to be this tragic mess. God bless him, even if he knew the risks it's still sad to die with so much left to do...

RIP Dan

You have touched many people in Australia, you will be missed

Will Power has been released from hospital (He was the second car to be launched high into the air after Dan) and Pippa Mann and JR Hildebrand are being kept overnight.

This disaster could have easily taken other lives too.

From what I understand, he'd voiced concerns about safety at this track as recently as this morning.

Been watching F1 & IndyCar since 1973, and this ranks up there among one of the worst accidents I've ever seen. And I've seen more than I care to remember.

Last I can remember being this shaken after a race was probably after Greg Moore lost his life at California Motor Speedway in '99.

Yes, the drivers are aware of the risks, but it never makes it any less sad.

i was gonna go to this race with amanda thank god we didnt

I'm still in disbelief. I'm just not used to seeing that kind of accident in Indycar. I know it does happen, but usually not on this scale, and not this severe.

His family and friends, and all the drivers dealing with this tragedy, are in my thoughts.

Never heard of the guy myself, not much of a (motor)sport guy.

Nevertheless, RIP Dan Wheldon. :salute:

he inspired a lot of people. RIP Dan, may you speed through the pearly gates

Sad to see him go.

N.

What a terrible time for motorsports in general, today Marco Simoncelli died during the MotoGP race in Sepang, Malaysia. :(

Juts noticed in the news too that Simoncelli is dead! What a sad time...
