Does anyone know if the DGV is near completion? Or has the project barely started?

I would be willing to bet that DGV is quite a ways out given that Dan is hard at work completing the FSX version of FS Passengers. Given all that work a break might be in order especially since there is a new version of Orbiter in the works as well. There is plenty of life left in DGIV. The UMMU SDK certainly adds some interesting dimensions to Orbiter as well. Dan has done some great work, as have the other developers. I am quite happy to give them the time they need for any upgrades or new projects they might decide on.

As of now, news of the DGV is nowhere to be seen.
However, the XR2 Ravenstar Mk II is nearing completion.

Looks like the Altea team is giving Dan a run for his money.
Or rather, a run for his time, since he makes no money off of Orbiter...

If you want to extend the life of the DGIV, use UCGO. UCGO addons are still coming out, so there is a lot still to come. Also, try using the Arrow as a mothership, with the DGIV as a lander or resupply shuttle.

Dan would have to comfirm this, but I read somewhere that he is not planning on making a DGV.

No, AFAIK he's going to focus on the Arrow (when he can). And I really hope he makes it into what seems to be it's original purpose- a vehicle capable of travelling and landing on Mars. Because it doesn't really make sense as a strictly vacuum to vacuum vehicle...

If you want to extend the life of the DGIV

DGIV has a life? I thought the only limitation to Orbiter was imagination...

I'd be a lot happier if he continued with the Arrow. IIRC, he said that the DGIV doesn't really have anywhere else to go, and I agree with that. The Arrow, however, still has a lot of potential to become even better.

Actually, you can upgrade the thrust of the hover thrusters, and its fuel consumption which allows the arrow to land on mars quite handily. The only thing that I can think of that might make it a purely vacuum vehicle is the gravity wheel.

I do hope that he models the cockpit a little more. The thing is amazing as it is but if you could just turn all the way around and see the inside of the cabin :) Beyond that all it needs are a couple of cosmetic details (hover and rcs thrusters modeled in and landing gear doors).

Dan has said multiple times that there will not be a DGV.

why do we need a DGV, the DG4 is good enough, maybe a little update so it can automatically land on the auto-probes from UCGO, but I thinks that's all

I disagree (slightly)- a VC for the DGIV would be awesome.

But that is cheating. :P

Yes, which also seems small enough to make people hurl at the mere prospect of using it. :uhh:

I don't see why it couldn't be within the main hull though. It might look odd, but still...

The reason I say the Arrow should not be a pure vacuum vehicle is simply doesn't look the part- it has wings, fins and an aerodynamic hull shape, all of which are superfluous in a vacuum.

One thing I think the Arrow should have though, is a system to undock the docked DGIV, and attach it via attachment points. Not being able to land with a docked vessel is a rather annoying problem with Orbiter.

I think he also said there wouldn't be one of those. The Arrow was the opposite though...:hmm:

I actually think the Arrow looks ridiculously sci-fi compared to the DGIV. I wouldn't even say it's aerodynamic.

Yes it does. Your guys out of oxygen eventually. :j/k:
By life, I meant when unimaginative people run out of scenarios. That's a ways away for me.
Also, notice how the Arrow's docking bay is much longer than the DGIV? Turns out it's the perfect size for an XR2.

I used to think like this, but the Ravenstar taught me otherwise. "A pilot's ship."
Sometimes autopilots are nice, but the XR series really forces you into involvement. This is how you challenge yourself, and become a better pilot for XR2 and for DGIV. :salute:

Dan has made it quite obvious that the Arrow was not designed to be flown on aerodynamic surfaces. Its strictly vacuum-vacuum. If you want to fly to-from places with atmospheres bring along a DGIV or an XR-2 (or XR-1) and park it.

That isn't a coincidence, the docking bay was designed to fit the XR-2.

I tend to think both a really valuable for different purposes. Both offer different challenges and opportunities. The XR-2 is definitely more 'seat of your pants' flying while the DGIV feels more controlled.

yes i think on his page specifically it says that delta glider is FINISHED. i like the XR-1 and it kind of seems like an update, but i like the DGIV better than the xr-1. i think the 4 looks cooler. i made a dgV by installing r-warp and modeling a warp drive lol

Don't get me wrong, I love them both. I did start out with DGIV, however, because the autopilots make it easier for noobs, and the systems are a bit less exotic.
Try piloting the DGIV manually and feel the turbopump! :headbang:
Anyway, If you really love the DGIV, your place is here:

Also, if you want to help Dan, buy FS Passengers!

Nothing beats the XR's scram whine for me... which eventually turns into a scream as the thing climbs like a homesick angel. <3

I had a look at the old Q/A section for the Deltaglider IV, and found this little snippet:

[Q]: Will you make a DGV ?

Yes but not before several months. I need food and cannot work for free all the time.
PS: Please do not submit feature request for it. I doubt Ill read such old threads when the time comes

Can I assume this is outdated information, or what?

I believe Dan was planning a DG-V, before UCGO and the Arrow freighter.

Since then, he has expressed his desire to focus on UCGO, and specifically the Arrow's development, and has said that his Delta Glider family's development has ceased.

He may make minor updates to the DG-IV 2, but that is beyond my scope to speculate on, depending on new frameworks and systems as they become available, including Orbiter's impending 2010 version, but beyond that, as I have said, the DG-IV is finished, and there will not be a fifth.
