If you were traveling between Earth and Mars you'd naturally want them to be as close as they could be in their orbits (perigee) before making the trek for a variety of reasons.

If you were telling someone that you had to depart at a specific time in order to meet perigee would it be called a departure window or is there a more scientific or astrological term that can be used?

i think it's just called "optimal launch window".... or "lowest delta-V launch window"

it's not exactly about launching when the target is closest to the source - it involves more complex timing so that you reach the target right at your Apoapsis... i've never really managed to pull it off, really... but i hear a lot from others here who have:rolleyes:

I gathered it was more about timing where the object (in this case a planet) would be in its orbit if you were traveling at a given the speed. For the purposes of writing though I just needed what the term would be.

thanks
