Thats pretty realistic for battlefield illumination, even the good old Carl Gustav had a pretty large radius with 250 meters for a 80 mm RPG fired from the ground.
That's a whole lot more than 250 meters. According to the labels, the vehicles are 2.9nm away...

Yes - like I said, a small low-flying Carl-Gustav already does 250 meters radius

If you look at the shadows of the aircraft, it is already outside the illuminated region.

The LUU-2B/B flares of the A-10C illuminate a region of 500 meters for 5 minutes in 1000 ft, more if higher.

Still, that's very bright illumination, and a pretty wide coverage area. It reminds me of the last mission of the old Top Gun game for NES, which was supposedly at night, in which you were to destroy the 'enemy' space shuttle.

So, I have only just figured out after all these years that my dreams transpire under the illumination of a SAB-100! :)

That seems like a somewhat excessive amount of illumination...

I don't know, it was very impressive, but did not really surprise me all that much. The naval star-shells used in WWII could supposedly illuminate a 1,000 yard radius. The SAB would also be free from the constraints of fitting up the barrel of a gun, meaning it is probably much more effective for its purpose than a star-shell by design (straight off the bat, its supposed candlepower is about 6 to 8 times that of a naval star-shell. Note, however, it DOES say only 1/4 mile radius of "total" illumination, so the observation is valid.). That said, and apart from this very probable "illusion"....

If you look at the shadows of the aircraft, it is already outside the illuminated region.

...the diffusion at the edges of the light pool could probably be a little more accentuated. Maybe "atmospherics" might give different results? Like, trying it with fog enabled, to see what it looks like?

That's looks a real "nostalgia game"!

Finally got a chance to start up again. Had (probably) the same "take out special forces in the mountains) mission, and then got ATO C.P8.4, which is actually a night mission! So I guess they did include some (one?) in the campaign, but it's not guaranteed to get it...

And the guy assigned to illuminate the target didn't do anything (and then crashed into one of the cargo planes while taxiing), so I had to rely on the LLTV to take stuff out. Worked well enough, although I would've much preferred if it wasn't having me take out nothing but infantry.

Now on to what will probably be the last mission. Sounds like good old fashioned CAS, a welcome reprieve after two "take out infantry" missions.

Not played much, recently, but when I do it is usually Fast Missions, with the intention of flying labels off. It is hard, and often runs me into trouble. The last one resulted in probably my best planned dead-stick through fuel exhaustion (leak) to date. I had managed to locate three BTR's; took out two and used the wingman to take out the third in a single pass. Then the wingman went wide, strayed over an SA-9 Strela and started crying about SAM launches, before getting shot down. I spotted the area where the SAMs were coming from, and indulged in the perilous practice of trolling for fire to positively locate them. I miscalculated where they were, and flew right into the hornet's nest. The video tells the rest of the story...

That aside, one more thing does baffle me a bit with the SU-25T, as simulated. Why does a fuel leak from one wing tank exhaust the fuel in all tanks? Reference.

DCS World addons are on a Flash Sale on steam, 66% off for the next 7 hours & 10 minutes from now.

I went ahead and picked up everything :)

It's a shame I missed that sale, would have loved to have picked up a couple more. But, gotta pay the bills.

Hopefully they'll repeat it soon, or have an even better one.

Well, it didn't take me long to seize my first Mustang engine...

Any landing you can walk away from is a good landing, right?

How did you do that? I had tried all kinds of aerobatics, but the engines never failed me.

I too was trying aerobatics. After a couple of spins and subsequent recoveries I tried this: high speed low level, pull-up at 45° at full throttle, followed by rolling to inverted and split s. Rinse and repeat.

What killed the engine was a mix of high temperatures during the steep climb-outs and over-revving (possibly) during the vertical / very steep descent.

If you won't loose speed, your engine will be able to run even at 60/3000 for some time.

Engine can run at 47/2700 for unlimited time.

Also, high manifold pressure combined with low RPM will damage the engine rather quickly.

Here is a good P51C flight video, where you can see engine modes, speed etc. during the flight.
Edit: the actual flight is in Part 3 of this video.

Far as I can see there is a similar sale at ED DCS up to the 5th January?

Since I already own LOMAC, I picked up Flaming Cliffs 3.

That just leaves Black Shark, P-51, and UH-1 Huey that I have yet to purchase.

Yes, but this being my third flight in the P-51 overall and two of those flights ending with a seized-up engine made me a bit too careful.

You know, you could fly away from the A-10C anytime.
Is the Mustang faster than the Hog? I tought otherwise yesterday. But the Hog may have the better climbrate and with 50 BBB's per Seconds (BeerBottlesized-Bullets) outstanding better armament, but the Mustang is way better in turns. So it's quite difficult to get a lock on. :)

At lower altitudes, the Mustang should be slightly faster, only at higher altitudes, the weak jet engine finally give some advantages. You can dive much faster with the Hog and from 10K on, the climb rates should be much better - but it really takes some punishment to make the Hog exceed 240 IAS in level flight. The maximum speeds of the Hog and the P-51 are almost equal - but the Hog needs longer to reach it.
